Feb 27, 05 - 4:22 PM Cavalier King Spaniels and Tibetan terriers

My very allergic daughter had no allergy problems with our pomerian. He recently died and we are considering other breeds such as the Cavalier King Charles and The tibetan terrior. Does anyone have any experience with these breeds and their likelihood of causing allergy symptoms? Thanks for any help

I pet sit a Cavalier a few months ago for a friend. I ended up putting him in a kennel near my house. I never knew that I had asthma. I was really sick and also sad that I had to put him in a kennel. My advice for you is to bring a Cavalier home for a few days and see if you develop any problems.
Good luck.

Dec 9, 04 - 7:11 AM Petal Cleanse DOES cure people from allergies to dogs (and cats) - my family is proof!

Petal Cleanse saved my family's heart!

I am so glad to hear about somebody talk about Petal Cleanse to get rid of pet allergies. I thought my family was the only people using it.

When we were living in Spain three years ago, my daughter adopted two dogs from the street (a Great Pyrenes and a German Shephard). Of course, my entire family fell in love with the dogs. My daughter, my wife, our infant son, and my mother-in-law all developed severe allergies to the dogs that only got worse. I went to doctors and called on many people for help, but everybody said to get rid of the dogs. My daughter and my wife said that if I get rid of the dogs, they would hate me forever.

A friend at the univeristy told me that she had heard of something from England that would totally get rid of pet allergies for people. Not wasting any time, I flew to London and went in search of this without any product name. After visiting two druggists, I found it (Petal Cleanse /D from Bio-Life Europe Ltd). I bought 10 bottles and stuffed them in my suitcase.

When I returned home (we had been keeping the dogs outside), I started using the stuff on the dogs and applied it two times the first week. In less than two weeks, the dogs started living indoors with us and everyone lived happy ever after. We have not had any allergies since then.

We moved to Washington DC last year, and I have been buying new stock of Petal Cleanse from the Allergic2Pets.com people in New York City over the Internet every month. I know that we could not live without it.

My boyfriend suffers from hives when he is contact with our black lab puppy. We tried Petal Cleanse but found it a pain to apply as she won;t sit still - thinks it is a big game - as you have to apply it then dry the fur - basically rubbing it back off again!!! Although hearing your success story I might try it again

We don't rub it off - just leave it on and let it dry. Also, the best way to apply it is to simply attach a spray nozzle to the top of the bottle (from hairspray or something similar), and just sprtiz and saturate all over. Rubbing it off really isn't necessary and wastes product if you ask me. ;-)

Feb 1, 05 - 7:22 AM Can you develop a dog allergy???

I have had at least one dog my entire life. I've never before had any problems with pet allergies. We have not adopted an Anatolian Shepherd and I think I may be having an allergic reaction to her. Since we got her I've had a stuffy nose, a sore throat, dry eyes. This has been going on for more than a month now, and the only time the symptoms went away - we were away from her for the weekend. Is this possible? We have no intention on giving her away - but if this is the problem I need to learn how to deal with it. Oh - have had a lab in the house for 8 years without a single problem. Thanks!

Allergists will deny it, but personal experience confirms your suspician.

I was raised in a professional dog-breeding home and am 30 now. For my whole life, I have been surrounded by Bearded Collies and Labrador Retrievers and never had a problem, until....

My parents purchased a Bullmastiff for my brother. Everytime I was in an enclosed space with him (like a room), my lungs would fill with fluid and it would take 2 weeks to cough it out. It was essentially asthma. Please note, I never sneezed or got red eyes around this dog. I suspect his coat, which was short and oily, had something to do with my problem. For the 6 years my parents had him, I was not able to even go into their house without having this strange type of asthma attack - it wasn't worth it - it was like getting bronchitis for 2 weeks at a time whenever i did go in. Even worse, I became extremely allergic to the clothes my parents wore that had been in the house, and they would have to buy new clothes whenever they would visit me because even being near their old clothes made me react. The dog died when he was 6 years old this year, and it's been 6 months since he passed. I am able once again to visit my parents without reacting.

My parents never really believed me - they thought I was exageratting because my reaction didn't meet their own experience and expectation of allergic reaction/asthma - heck, the bullmastiff was actually a gift to my younger brother who has real asthma ( I never had asthma).

My allergist tells me this is hooey - really nice don't you think? Apparently, I tested allergic to all dogs on my skin test, but my personal experience has proved that I only react to one animal (so far).

Yes, in our experience, you can develop an allergy to dogs. My mother had a german shepherd when she was a teenager and had no reactions whatsoever--(to him or any other dog, for that matter.) Now, 30 years later, she has moderate allergies to dogs...she just gets itchy eyes and sneezes...it's not too serious.

I have had a on-going rash (all over) off & on for about 6 months now at times it almost hurts like someone sticking needles all over other times it's barly visable but never goes completly away. We already had dogs & rescued a new dog in Aug. in the middle of Sept. I started to develop this rash. I am very allergic to cats they bothers my eyes, nose, lungs, breathing etc. so I know what that is like but this is just a rash nothing else allergy like. I have seen SEVERAL Dr's they don't think it could be the dog without the other symptoms. Has anyone else had this happen????

I have been thinking about the possibility of getting an English Springer Spaniel. I do have allergies. It seems I am espesially bothered by certain breeds, specifically labs, boxers, doberman pinchers. I break out in hives from the dander of these dogs. Other breeds don't seem to bother me. Any info on allergy sufferers being affected by the english springer spaniel. I'm also looking for a dog that will be easily housebroken and trained. I love dogs and would love to add a dog to my family.

Everything was fine until 2 weeks ago and my daughter developed a cough(only a cough)so we took her to the doctor and he said allergies to cat and to most likely get rid of the cat so when we come home we put the cat in the shed and cleaned the house the best we know how and it has been a week and the cat is gone and still a cough she has. Any ideas what the problem is? she has never been tested for allergies or any thing and she has never had a pet in the house but we go and spend the night at family members homes and they have pets and she is fine. i am clueless and i would love to have and pet and so would the kids???

Doctors are quick to jump at the fact that there is a new pet in the house so that HAS to be it, Yeah right. I realise that it has been 2 months since the posting so how long did it take for her cough to go away? I think that it was more likely a cold or a bug she caught than allergies. Allergies are usually more than a cough, although it may start out with a cough, it will quickley progress into much worse things. Bring the cat back, I highly doubt it was the problem to begin with.

Mar 13, 05 - 1:59 PM Pit Bulls and allergy question

Hi everyone. I had an American Pit Bull Terrier for 10 years with little allergy trouble. Since she died I tried getting two other dogs of different breed because pit bulls are technically banned where I live, but I get allergy trouble each time! I've done a lot of reseach online into dogs that are less allergenic and the lists always seem to be poodles and these long haired terrier type dogs. I'm wondering why the three pit bull breeds (American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier and Staffordshire Terrier) are never in the "hypo-allergenic" lists? Is it because of bad rap of the breed (they really are friendly dogs)? Was my experience with my dog just a fluke? I know everyone's different, but I really had a good experience with this breed. I also stayed with a roomate years ago that had a pit bull and I had no allergy trouble from her. My dog always seemed to have very low dander and she was practically hairless herself. You could see her pink and black spotted skin her coat was so thin. No undercoat at all. Anyway, just curious what others' experiences with the breed are. I want another dog so bad that I'm working on moving from here so I can have another pit bull.

Mar 13th, 2005 - 2:49 PM Re: Pit Bulls and allergy question

I have never seen Pit Bulls/Am Staffs listed as being low dander breeds, but I don't think it's because of the breed's reputation. It's the type of hair. Most breeds with short hair, e.g. Dalmatians, Beagles, Bassett Hounds, are not on the breed lists recommended for allergy sufferers. The Italian Greyhound, even though it has short hair, is often listed as being a less dander producing dog. But according to the Italian Greyhound breeders I've spoken with this is not true.

Mar 13th, 2005 - 9:21 PM Re: Pit Bulls and allergy question

Hi, Wow how amazing that someone else found out the exact same thing I did about Pit Bulls. I am a severe allergy sufferer, especially to dogs, problem is, I'm more of a dog lover than a health nut so 2 years ago I conviced my boyfriend to take in a pit bull puppy. Well I have to tell you, when I got that little puppy home and started to watch her grow, I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. I ACTUALLY got to have a dog, I was 21 at the time, and for the first time in my life, I got to have a real pet. It is such a relief to hear that it wasn't just by chance, that someone else had the same reaction I did. Now I am confident to adopt another pit bull as a pet, as I am 98% sure I will not have any allergy issues. Thank you for confirming my beliefs!

Jan 24, 05 - 4:07 PM HELP - OUR FAMILY WANT A DOG BUT I SUFFER WITH EZCEMA

Hi, my name is Anita - I have had ezcema since I was a child - now I'm 32, married with 2 children and as a family we would love to own a dog. However, I have had allergic reactions to dogs before - streaming eyes, runny nose and irritation to the ezcema. So far the children have shown no signs of having my ezcema or allergies, and therefore we are trying to get good advice/information regarding breeds, preventative measures and so on, from other families who have been in a similar position but have been able to add a dog to their family. I too am a life long eczema sufferer and was just able to get my first dog at 29. I discovered that I did not have a problem with poodles, bonus - they don't shed! As you know though, it will be your reaction to the dog's saliva that you will have to test and that can differ even between dogs within a breed.

Sorry to hear about you not beaing able to have a dog because of a person that is allergic to dogs. I, myself is allergic to dogs and cats and I would love to have. But I have to live with the fact that I would never be able to have any. The way it makes a person who is allergic, is undescrible. Really not a good feeling. Im sure that your stepmom apreciates you being understandable. All my friends either have a dog or cat and it is hard for me to visit them for a long period. The only thing that I can do to help my situation is I take a Claritin allergic pill sometimes when i know ill be around dogs or cats. But it just helps and dont get rid of the problem completly. Some days I will be less Alergic then others, or depending if theres carpet in the house or the type of dog or cat. Sadly theres no remedies, hope they will come up with one.. It is really not fun and makes you sick like you wouldn't beleive.

Sorry about the miss spelling as I am french.

I have horrible allergies to dogs but recently discovered I am OK with poodles. I brought home a mini poodle last fall and have had no problems. You should try and find someone with a poodle and visit their house and see how you do. (note, do not go to a pet shop or shelter for the initial allergy test because they often mix their dogs so the poodle might have rubbed against a lab and you might be reacting to that).
Best of luck, my dog has brought me so much joy!

Mar 17, 05 - 4:04 PM Son is allergic, had to adopt out my dog today

My 5 month old was diagnosed as being allergic, so today was the day my poor pooch got adopted into a new home. I am absolutely heartbroken and I guess I am just looking for a little bit of support. That dog was my heart, and I've been crying ever since my son's dog allergy was diagnosed.

At this point I am thinking about waiting until he can talk (and tell us how he feels physically, so we know if he's having symptoms that are dog related) and buying/adopting a mexican hairless or AHT. Anyone have good experiences with these breeds?

Mar 17th, 2005 - 4:38 PM Re: Son is allergic, had to adopt out my dog today

When my son was 6 years old we found out he is allergic to dogs and cats. We immediately found homes for our 2 dogs, changed the flooring and replaced the furniture. Our son was covered in Execma (rashes) throughout his body. The hardest part wasn't giving up the family pets (even though we loved them and they were a part of our family) it was seeing our son suffer with rashes on the backs of his knees, elbows and all over his face. We are going to get him tested again (Age 8 now) soon because he has been doing very well. He has accidently been near a dog and hasn't reacted but once he went to a friends home who we found out later had recently given away their dog. Our son came home from that play date broken out and congested. He sees the Allergist regularly and I would never consider getting a dog or having him take shots. I've been told several times that our son will outgrow this. Maybe this helps you!

Mar 18th, 2005 - 8:02 AM Re: Son is allergic, had to adopt out my dog today

Let me give you a brief story. Two of my four children are asthmatic. I did not even know anything about ezcema when my daughter got at age of 2 months. Then she was allergic to peanuts at age of 2. We had two gerbils and she was fine and pet them all the time until gerbils died, At age of 3, she got asthma attack after she got cold virus. She got rash on the back of legs when my cousin's dogs were around. I didn't even that she was allergic to pet dander. My cousin wanted to give me one show pup but I was not ready. Again, she played with other dogs and cats and later she got watery eyes and itchy face. I figured out and she took allergy tests and it was pet dander and grass and tree pollens. I was so mad that we would not able to get any pets at all. A few months ago, we went to see Coton breeder and wanted to see how reaction my daughter(she is 9 now) was. She had no watery eyes and no itchy. She was so excited but I had to turn her down because her pediatrican said best advice is no dog in the house. If I get a dog, her allergry will develop more and more or worse? So, it is better not to consider a dog! I know she will not outgrow but allergies might be much less. All dogs included hypoallergnic dogs like AHT, Coton de Tulear can produce pet dander. My asthmatic son is not allergic to pet dander and doesnt have ezcema- I am hoping he will outgrow soon.
Hope you understand about allergies and asthma. Another post I wrote about best advice is no dog in the house. Life with my two asthamtic children is not easy. Best wishes!

We just adopted a minature Dachshund puppy. She's wonderful!

Unfortunately, my wife is having bad allergic reactions to her. (sneezing, stuffy nose, hives, skin irritation, headaches) She thought that she was only allergic to cats! She's taking perscription allergy medicine but she's still miserable.

She says we have to give her back - she can't take it any more. I'm heartbroken already - when the kids find out they'll miserable!! (one is 7 the other is 3 years old)

Is there anything we can do to reduce her allergic reaction?

Mar 28th, 2005 - 9:29 PM Tips for reducing pet allergens in your home

Tips for reducing pet allergens in your home:

1. Do not allow dogs in your bedroom, your bedroom should stay dog dander free
2. Use a HEPA room air cleaner in your bedroom and in the family room, close the bedroom door at night to help clean the air in the room
3. Use an electrostatic filter with your central heat or air, it will help clean the air distributed through the house
4. Use baby gates to keep the dogs away from the bedrooms, or keep the bedroom door closed at all times
5. Use bare, easy to clean floors in all the rooms where the dogs spent most of their time, no wall-to-wall carpeting collecting dander
6. Bathe your dogs frequently, twice a week is recommended in a 1999 allergy study, using a mild dog shampoo helps prevent over drying of the skin
7. Wash all dog bedding, doggie shirts, and soft dog toys frequently
8. Cover the family room sofas with sheets to help prevent dog dander deposits on them, wash the sheets frequently, leather is the ideal sofa material for allergy sufferers
9. Vacuum a lot and use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter (although some studies show that vacuuming stirs pet allergens in the house, even a HEPA vacuum)
10. Open the windows occasionally to let the airborne pet dander air out, but not when the pollen count is high outside
11. Wash your hands after petting the dogs, avoid touching your eyes and face when playing with the dogs
12. Avoid transporting dogs in your car to keep your car dog dander free, if you have no second car, you can cover the car seat with a washable sheet or blanket, leather seats are ideal
13. Avoid clutter in the house, it collects dust and dander
14. Cover your home's air vents with commercial air vent filters or use cheese cloth
