Feb 27, 05 - 2:35 PM Any advice about poodles ?

Does anyone have any experience of poodles and allergies?
Since my 8 year old daughter had an awful reaction with a border collie/lab pup with asthma and is less allergic to a schnouzer, but it still makes her wheeze with prolonged contact we had given up hope of having a dog. However, people keep suggesting a poodle. I realise there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic breed and a poodle would not be my first choice of dog, but are they really as good for people with allergies as everyone says? My daughter is not even very asthmatic but is obviously very sensative to some (or all?) dogs and I do not need to have her allergy tested to realise this.I expect the only way to find out if she is allergic to Poodles is for her to spend time with them but I would not risk getting another pup that we might have to return and I do not know anyone with one. My daughters health is paramount but if there is a chance she could live in harmony with one it would be great. We live in the UK and there doesn't seem to be the poodle cross breeds that I keep reading about.
Any advice or successful/unsuccessful stories would be much appreciated.

Mar 4th, 2005 - 5:55 AM Re: Any advice about poodles ?

I have experienced the same heartache. I got my boys a cat and my 5 year old was allergic. I then decided to get a dog and unwisely tried a German Sheppard(not the first choice for allergy sufferers)and of course the sneezing and itching started. We looked on the web and asked alot of pet owners over the next year and a half. Everyone said...oh poodles are just great for allergy sufferers. I did not want to upset my kids again by giving away yet another pet so I thought...I'll go with the best bet..a 100% poodle!
We are now on day two and my son has started sneezing and getting those allergy eyes! I have noticed that it is the saliva not the hair that is the problem. I don't know what to do. My sons and husband will be devastated if I get rid of this pet.....but who wants their child to suffer for years?

Save yourself the stress and make sure you do borrow a dog exactly like the one you want for at least a week before you dive in! Don't make the same mistake I did.

I have horrible allergies to dogs and recently discovered I am OK with poodles. I brought home a mini poodle in the fall and he has brought such joy to my life. Definitely go visit with the dogs first though and if there are any signs of allergies, wait.

Dear Patty,

it's been a few weeks and I was wondering what the outcome was with your sons reaction to your poodle. Did you manage to come to a happy resolution? I guess if you had you would have shared your story but I have been keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Apr 3, 05 - 1:07 PM Ear infections and allergies

We have a 4 year old beagle. We have had her since she was a pup. Nine months ago we had a baby and since then we have been dealing with ear infection after ear infection. I took her to the doctor and he said that it could be because of an allergy to something in the house. I am wondering if you have ever heard of a dog allergy causing ear infections.

the best thing to do is to give your dog regular baths because the one thing that triggers allergies the most is dog dandruff. Also the type of shampoo is important on my dog to stop my allergies I use Solid Gold. Good Luck!!!

I am allergic to dogs, but my daughter desperately wanted one. After much research and actual petting many so-called hypo-allergenic dogs, we ended up with a shih tzu puppy. Although I do have some reaction to him it is very mild. I mostly just have to wash my hands well after handling him. He is the sweetest dog and a welcome addition to our family. You should have your mom spend some time with a dog like a shih tzu before taking it home. It can be heartbreaking otherwise. Good Luck!

Hi my mom has really bad allergies to dogs. I have wanted one since I have been like 2. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do. We have been thinking about Shih-tzus, Maltese's, and Bichon Frise's. Does anyone know of a nice friendly dog that sheds little skin dander?

Apr 3rd, 2005 - 4:29 PM Re: Mom allergic to dogs

We just got a shih tzu puppy about 3 weeks ago after a long search for a dog that I am not allergic to. I tried the bichon and had a reaction to that one. You can also consider the wheaten terrier. So far I have done very well with the shih tzu. I just wash my hands a lot, especially after I handle him or pet him. So far so good! He is a wonderful dog. Not too hard to train and great with my children (ages 5 and 7). I would definitely recommend a shih tzu, plus they don't shed and they have hair instead of fur. I checked out a lot of dogs before getting the shih tzu due to my allergies and this was the best one I found. Good Luck!

Miniature schnauzers! They are the best! I would suggest visiting with a breeder to make sure you're ok.

There is no such thing as a hypo-allergenic dog. Some breeds are known to cause less allergens than other breeds, but like Celia said, check out the breed personally to see how you react before you buy.

Oct 18th, 2004 - 4:11 PM Re: hypo allergic dogs

I, like the person who replied before me, do not believe there is any such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. I love dogs, but I am also allergic to dogs -- itchy eyes, asthma -- not a good combo. as all of you know. Here's been my experience in a nutshell: I have yet to find a dog that I have absolutely no allergic reaction to. I also have to inform you that I take allergy meds (Allegra-D, Rhinocort Aqua nasal spray, and Patanol eye drops). I had a lhasa apso/maltese mix, and my allergies were not too bad with him. I foster-parented a Yorkie for 4 months and had horrible reactions to him. I now have a maltese, and my allergies have not been very bad with him. He even sleeps with us -- but not on the pillows. I also let him give me kisses on the lips. We keep him in a puppy cut, and we do bathe him once a week and my husband brushes him. We also have very little carpeting in the house. I do still feel tightness in my lungs - almost on a daily basis. I also have really itchy eyes on occasion. It's all a matter of how much of your allergy symptoms you are willing to live with for the next 10-15+ years of your life. How much do you want a dog versus how much are you willing to "suffer" for it? Obviously I'm willing to "suffer" some for my dog.

I do want to make sure you do not take on a dog too hastily and then have to get rid of him because of your allergies. Don't be selfish - you may think you're the only one who will suffer, but the dog will too. You could try to "borrow" a dog from someone you know. You probably will need to be around the dog for AT LEAST a couple of weeks if not longer. You could also see about being a foster parent for a rescue group, but keep in mind that some of those dogs may have health problems, and you will likely have to pay for the dog's treatment during the time you are fostering.

Feb 12th, 2005 - 6:17 AM Re: hypo allergic dogs

I was quite dismayed to hear that minature shnauzers are supposed to be less allergic when I first checked out this site because that is the very dog my 8 year old daughter has problems breathing around. She hasn't been around many other dogs to know how she is with them but her reaction to a border collie/lab cross pup was frightening, she could hardly breathe. We tried bathing the pup and petal cleanse but it was no good. Perhaps if her Nans shnauzer was bathed regularly her reaction may be less severe. We tried petal cleanse a few years ago but didn't see much improvement and stopped using it. It may have been that we didn't give the petal cleanse a good enough chance. We are holding on to the hope that there is a dog out there my daughter is not allergic to but we just need to find it . It seems that what one person calls a hypo allergenic dog is not always the case for everyone. Knowing my daughter has a tendacy to be allergic we got the pup on a weeks trial but only ended up keeping her 2 days and even then we were all heartbroken to give her up. So choose very carefully and good luck!

Our family just lost a Jack Russell Terrier and we are all heart broken. She was a very intelligent dog and sensitive to the family members...quite different from the hyper-dog reputation of the Jack Russell. I am investigating which dog breed would best suit our family. I have allergies, but my son and husband love the terrier breed for its intelligence and activity. We need to find a dog who can play and learn tricks, intelligent and loving. I would like to find one who I am less allergic to. Any suggestions?

Apr 5th, 2005 - 2:50 AM Re: hypo allergic dogs

In our search for a poodle we came accross a wonderful lady who had Bedlington terrier pups. Since they keep cropping up on the less allergic lists and we were having trouble finding a poodle we decided to find out more about them.
The pictures in books give a very different picture to the dogs we met when not groomed in the traditional way. They appeared to be the perfect dog for us - not too big for me and not too small for my husband and would enjoy a good walk. They have a curly coat, long furry tail, long furry ears, a soft friendly face, long legs and a wonderful nature, especially around my daughters, aged 6 and 8. We were taken by them in every way.
We explained my daughters asthma and the breeder was very sympathetic having had an son who was asthmatic as a child, but she also had a bulldog. Before we visited the lady had cleaned and separated the pups from the bulldog and my daughter cuddled and stroked the pups and was ok for a while and just as we were about to leave after 2 hours my daughter started wheezing. Not sure whether the bulldog was tipping the balance I went back and 'borrowed' a pup at the breeders suggestion yesterday (I dont expect there are too many breeders who would do that!). By the time my daughter got home the pup was bathed dried and petal cleansed for good measure. It didn't take long before we heard a slight wheeze from my daughter, which was soon resolved by her inhaler and again before she went to bed. Enough evidence for me to see that it wasn't the bulldogs fault after all. Therefore I am sitting typing and enjoying having a lovely little bundle sleeping at my feet before I take her back to the kind breeder. I thought of keeping her another night but I don't really think it will achieve anything and we are just getting too attached to her already. The breeder did suggest keeping the dog outside in a kennel but I cant imagine doing that since I have always considered dogs to be a part of the family.
Short of a miracle I don't think we are meant to have a dog but I would definately recommend a lesser allergic person to check them out.

I adopted my sweet golden puppy in January, and had a sinus infection most of the month. It didn't phase me because I have a few allergies and infrequent asthma. I finally noticed that I was having itchy nose and eyes after petting her. I also noticed that I was having bad nasal drip that was making my throat raw in places. Does this seem extreme?

Today my daughter had an allergy test she is allergic to all kinds of things. She has never really seemed like shed have allergies that bad. We bought two yellow labs on Sunday and have had them in the house, she might have sneezed 3 times since we have had them. The nurse told me the need to go out side and if she touches them I need to wash her from head to toe. I think its extreme since Ive never seen any signs and we have had other dogs, but on the test dogs and peanuts swole p the worst. As for the peanuts I wot give her an agian but if an of yall understand them please explain, peanut butter is her favorite she eats a jair a week and i have never seen a reaction why is this?

It is pretty tough for you. How old is she? My daughter(9) is asthmatic and is allergic to peanuts, tree and grass pollens and pet dander. It is not easy that you might have to get rid of pups but it will work things out like you try to use allerpet products( helps to reduce pet dander), buy air purfier, get rid of carpet, keep dogs outside all the time, do not let dogs sleep in bedrooms, vacuum often, etc.

My family wanted to have a dog(hypo-allerynic- means less allergy not 100%) but I turned my daughter down because she might have worst wheezing, rash, stuffy nose when a dog lives in the house for many years. I don't want to risk her life. Plus, I don't want to spend too much money for allergy products, prescriptions and allergy shots (what if not working well). Too many prescriptions (side effects) are not good for child's health. I wish she takes nothing but she has to take daily since she was 3 years old.

I was 15 years old and I had really bad allergy-I could not breath and had a lot of sneezes. I took tests and I was allergic to almost all foods and pet dander! My German Shepard dog was living in my house but never stayed in my bedroom. I got allergy shots and it worked well. I played with him a lot and then changed my clothes right away before I started sneeze again! Maybe allergy shots might work for your daughter but how old is she. If she is so young, it might not be good for her.

Good Luck!

Almost same situation! I copied and pasted this from other post I wrote:

Let me give you a brief story. Two of my four children are asthmatic. I did not even know anything about ezcema when my daughter got at age of 2 months. Then she was allergic to peanuts at age of 2. We had two gerbils and she was fine and pet them all the time until gerbils died, At age of 3, she got asthma attack after she got cold virus. She got rash on the back of legs when my cousin's dogs were around. I didn't even know that she was allergic to pet dander. My cousin wanted to give me one show pup but I was not ready. Again, she played with other dogs and cats and later she got watery eyes and itchy face. I figured out and she took allergy tests and it was pet dander and grass and tree pollens. I was so mad that we would not able to get any pets at all. A few months ago, we went to see Coton breeder and wanted to see how reaction my daughter(she is 9 now) was. She had no watery eyes and no itchy. She was so excited but I had to turn her down because her pediatrican said best advice is no dog in the house. If I get a dog, her allergry will develop more and more or worse? So, it is better not to consider a dog! I know she will not outgrow but allergies might be much less. All dogs included hypoallergnic dogs like AHT, Coton de Tulear can produce dander. My asthmatic son is not allergic to pet dander and doesnt have ezcema- I am hoping he will outgrow soon.
Hope you understand about allergies and asthma. Another post I wrote about best advice is no dog in the house. Life with my two asthamtic children is not easy. Best wishes!

I know how upset or disappointed you are. I am, too. I have no idea why my daughter has allergies and asthma. Family heredity or enviroment?. She is happy with her life everyday. She enjoys music, skating and writing.

You don't have to rid of carpet. My daughter has cleaned carpet in her room since she was born. She is not allergic to dustmites. I have to keep the windows closed all the time-pollens can enter the house! I vacuum weekly but her room is messy! Many things- I learn and I keep reducing her allergies during spring and summer. I am thinking about buying air purfier for her room because she always complains that she can't sleep well when her nostral is blocked. Allergy prescriptions like singular, Zytec, etc. don't work at all. So, she takes only nasal spray everyday (only spring and summer). Also, she takes Advair daily for her asthma. She hates and is so tired of it. If your daughter is not asthmatic, then she is so lucky. She will be able to control her allergies when she gets older. Right now, she is so little. Let's hope she will outgrow!

Hope your daughter will feel better soon after you can figure out what things(suffed animals, chemical like bathroom cleaner, spray, smoke, bad carpet, down(feathers-pet dander, too) pillow/comforter, etc.) bother her. I am not much help.

Take care of her.

My daughter is allergic to dust mites, and they are watching to se if she has asthma. This is the thing i dont understand, she really doesnt show signs of allergies, mabe every once in a while when the pollen gets bad, why if these test are showing that shes allergic to all these things ( dogs, peanuts, dustmites, trees, grass ect...) why havent we been able to tell? The reason we had her tested is every JAnuary she has gotten phnemonia, its really the only time of the year she gets sick besides some ear infections. Im just not understanding allergies.

Apr 8th, 2005 - 9:00 AM Re: My daughter had allergy test today Allergic to alot, do I have to get ride of pups

There are many many allergy suffers out there. You know I am allergic to pet dander, dustmites, mold and almost all food except nuts and fish only. I still can eat allergy food but not all the times. My mother is allergic to penicillin but why my daughter is asthmatic? That is my question and I need the answer but no doctor know why body gets bad reactions. My daughter heard and hoped that new vaccine for peanut-allergy people will be released soon but still on trail right now. She wants to taste PB and dislikes soynut butter.

I think the websites might help you undersand what allergy is all about. I am member of AANMA.org and I learn a lot since my daughter got asthma after allergies. Also, there is another website: aafa.org

I remember my daughter got phnemonia two times when she was 3 and 4. It scared me to death! I had no idea what my daughter had bad cough and had labor breaths. I took her to see Pediatrican and I was told that I rushed her to the emergency room. Then she was taken by ambluance to Children's Memorial Hospital. She got worst and was taken to PICU overnight. I was so panicked and so upset. She got bad pnemonia. She got better and the news what the specialist said was shocked to me and my husband. She now had asthma. I did not know what it was all about. I learned alot from doctor and websites. None of my families has asthma. She is only one in the family but I am glad that she is not alone and has youngest brother who is asthmatic, too. They can share and learn about asthma and allergies. Brother is allergic to peanut, too! They both can eat almond cookies but I am allergic to it not peanut! I eat PB sanwich! Strange! I think bodies have many different protien cells. I have no idea. I am not allergy doctor!

Daily, my daughter takes peak flow(P.F.- it is measurement for breath level. She blows and her lung is under control) twice a day. She takes Advair twice a day. My son takes Pulmicort by nebulizer and is learning how to blow with P.f. He is 4 1/2 years old.

Hope this helps you undrstand before it will happen to your daughter in the future. Give pups good homes if your daughter is worst. Lab pups shred too much and they are not good for allergy suffers. It is up to you. If you want to keep them, then you might have to give them bath a few times a month and vacuum very often. It is not easy for you. And for me, too! My daughter gets sick easily because many school kids have cold(flu) and cough and give her wheezing! I keep telling her to wash her hands every time she gets home from school and any places! She got wheezing 4 times last Feb.

Good Luck

Have you walked barefoot in the house before? How long have you lived there with the dog? Do you know that you're allergic to dogs? Have you or anyone shampooed the carpet recently and used commercial carpet shampoos? Many people are allergic to those. If a carpet has been shampooed with one of those and I walk on it barefoot within several hours my feet will begin to itch, turn red and swell up. It's very unpleasant. I hope you figure it out soon

Apr 27, 05 - 2:49 AM Does PetalCleanse really eliminate pet allergies?

Hi, my boyfriend and I are planning to buy a poodlexmaltese pup. But we found out that he is allergic to them. When he touched them, 15 minutes later he got running rose, sneezing and itchy eyes.

So, after reading the discussion board, besides the tips offered by Sweet Lucy, people were talking about this PetalCleanse product that can kill the allergen.

Has anyone tried to use it?Does it really work?

I've heard about other similiar product called allerpet/d. Is this good as well?

I live in australia, does anyone know where can I get such product?

We will greatly appreciate any help. Since we have been fallen in love with the pup.

Apr 28th, 2005 - 2:17 AM Re: Does PetalCleanse really eliminate pet allergies?

Dear Shirley,

I would like to say that petal cleanse is the miracle its cracked up to be and it may well be for some people but it didn't help my family. My daughter becomes very 'wheezy' around dogs and we have tried petal cleanse on several dogs before she has gone anywhere near them but she still ends up wheezing if she is in the same room as them. I'm not sure if it helps but it doesn't seem to. I even gave it another go after reading some other testamonials on its success on this website but to no avail. It may well help with different types of reaction but my daughters only problem is asthma. she doesn't sneeze or get itchy eyes although her eyes will come up if she touches a dog and rubs her eyes without washing her hands or if she is licked by a dog.

If you can get hold of petal cleanse or a similar product it might be worth a try on the pup before you bring it home or buy the pup. Also they say bathing the dog regularly can help and just being particular with handwashing after touching a dog can help.

Either way I wish you luck but I would not get a dog on the strength of these so called miracle cures working just in case they don't but there is no harm in trying them out first.
