May 27, 07 - 9:48 PM buying a home where dogs have lived (itching allergies)

Hi
I am looking for a house to buy when I go to look at a house where they had pets, my body itches after 30 minutes if I buy a house, is it possible to get rid of these sources of itching if yes how long it takes?

May 28th, 2007 - 7:44 PM Re: buying a home where dogs have lived (itching allergies)

You will have to clean the house very thoroughly before moving in. Wash all washable surfaces and vacuum everything, including walls. Also wash all curtains and any other fabrics that remain in the house after the pet owners have moved out. Floor-to-floor carpets will be the hardest ones to clean. You could try a carpet cleaning service that specializes in eliminating pet dander etc., but your best bet is to replace the carpets. Open all windows to air out the dog dander as much as possible.

Is there anyone out there using daily prescriptions such as allegra and nasonex to control their dog allergies? Are they working?

I use prescription asthma and allergy medications continuosly to control my dog and other allergies. These medications reduce the level of my allergic reactions quite a bit if I take them as prescribed. Skipping a dose worsens my allergies almost immediately.

I am allergic to dogs also. I find that I do better around smaller dogs since they produce less dander. But, your dad is just going to have to be around the specific breeds to see what kind of reactions he has. And try to be around ADULT dogs. Puppies are going to have less dander and can give a negative allergic reaction when the adult could make him sneeze. I had a schnauzer when I was growing up and I'm getting a Maltese now. They say that a Giant Schnauzer has lower dander levels. Thats a rather large dog. Maybe look into those??

Jul 14th, 2006 - 1:16 PM Re: I REALLY WANT A DOG

Hi everyone! I reply to this topic because there's no point to start a new one because I'm going to talk the same subject which is...
I really want a dog.

All my life I have been wanting a dog but my mom has never let me to have one. 4 years ago I found out that I'm allergic to dogs. My heart just broke.
Now I'm moving to my own apartment and I have started wondering: can I finally have a dog? Could I cope with one?
Then found this website. I red the list of the products which maybe relief allergy and the other list which advised how to make my home as hypo allergic as possible. Best thing is that I found out that Chinese crested is one of the lower dander breeds. I was so happy because I have always liked that breed.
I have been thinking of getting every product what is recommended in this website (hepa air purifier, Allerpet d for dogs, washable dog bed, hepa vacuum cleaner). I already have a salt pipe (try this! It helps breathing). And I'm going to organise my home so it will be easy to clean and no dogs allowed to a bedroom!

I have really thought this through and thought every possible way to make my home as hypo allergic as possible but still I can't decide what to do. I cannot help thinking that I'm the most selfish person on earth if I get a dog even though I'm allergic. But not getting a dog will break my heart over and over again. *tears*
Sometimes I really think that I really, really could do this and get along just fine with the little dog. But I can't stop thinking what if my allergic as going to get worse or what if I get asthma? Is it really worth to risk my health? I have been thinking this hard and I have asked couple of my relatives could they take my dog if I cant keep it.
I have also been thinking that I'm allergic to dust mites as well so if my allergic get worse it may be because of dust mites not because of the dog, right? It may get worse even if I never get a dog.

Please give me your opinions!

(Sorry my bad English)

Aug 26th, 2006 - 12:15 PM Re: I REALLY WANT A DOG

Hiya, My hubby is allergic to dogs. We really want one. I have done a bit of research on different low dander dog breeds. My husband is not allergic to huskies. They are big dogs, but I have been told that they make poor house pets. On further investigation I found Native American Indian Dogs. These are beautiful dogs that look similar to huskies, they are big. Unfortunately they are bred in America and Canada, they don't export and we stay Scotland. We have visited a few breeders of different dogs we liked the look of. A good breeder will be happy to let you visit a few times to check how your allergies react. We are on the waiting list for a Hungarian Puli pup now. They have a wool coat and non allergic saliva (as far as hubbies skin reaction was concerned.) We will keep the coat quite short as this will lower dander retention in this breeds textured coat. Regular bathing is also recommended. I hope this helps with your dads wish for a big dog.

Jun 18, 07 - 10:51 AM So... what did you all do?

I've been reading all these different posts about people who thought they had doggie allergies, etc. What did you all eventually do? I have a similar story, had dogs all my life- got one from a shelter and all the sudden the asthma symptoms are back, and itchy nose, but that's it. The doc seems to think its a coincidence, as the weeks go by I'm not sure.

How have you all delt with this? I esp feel bad, as my husband loves the pet's weve had, and we've never been able to keep them bc of my allergies.

Kare
Jun 20th, 2007 - 12:20 PM Re: So... what did you all do?

I was happy to come across this forum; I hope my post does not hurt anyone's feelings...but this is my story!

I am severely allergic to all animals. I can't have any type of pet, and I can't visit anyone with a pet. If I hug someone who has pets, I will sneeze and get a scratchy throat; however, if I actually go to someone's house with a pet, even after 5 minutes, my throat will start closing up, and I'll start wheezing and my eyes will end up being itchy all night. I might even get worse the next day with a delayed reaction. I take zyrtec every single day and use inhalers as well. I had allergy shots, including against my animal allergies, for 6 years. There are others like me; we just have to avoid being around animals. I even have to make sure I don't use feather pillows at hotels as that will make me terribly sick. Oh, did I mention, I can't wear wool!

I feel very sorry for those people who expose their young children and even babies to pets, just because they want to have a pet. The poor child has to suffer through constantly struggling to breathe and it's not fun, and they can't really express their feelings and needs, and have no choice in the matter. I know how it feels, and I would never put a child through that. Until newer and better drugs and inhaler treatments were available, I suffered terribly.

It is not a matter of just a sneeze or two for me, but it could be a life-threatening situation if I were around cats or dogs for any length of time. Today someone brought in their dog to work and I hated being in that position but I had to ask them to take it home. Still, the office is already "infested" with animal dander, etc. and it will effect me.

Great post! People who do not have allergies themselves (or maybe just have a mild one that's easily controlled) often find if very difficult to understand, or even believe, how miserable allergy sufferers can feel.

Jul 30th, 2007 - 9:35 AM Re: So... what did you all do?

Just an update- turns out my breathing issues were NOT related to the dog. I'm glad we kept her and worked through my symptoms, instead of jumping the gun and giving her away. You owe it to yourself to really listen to your body and the symptoms, and if you really dont think its the animal- try by the process of elimination to figure it out. Get a blood test done, etc. Its worth it!

Aug 25, 06 - 4:13 PM allergy to new puppy

I just got a new Border Collie puppy, he's now 12 weeks old, and he's beautiful.
since i have had him the past two weeks i have been getting a lot of allergy symptoms, really sore throat and difficulty in swallowing and sore glands, sinus pain in face and head and earache, itchy eyes and itching all over my body, plus burning tongue and when he licks me it burns.
I had a dog for 17 years, she died about 12 months ago and i was fine with her.
I know i have a lot of symptoms and feel in a lot of pain, but i can't find it in my heart to part from him, i don't know how long i can go on with this, but each time i think about rehoming him i cry and get very upset.
I take anti-histamine for the itching and that helps, but my throat and sinus stays bad, doctor didn't give me anything for them.
I know it makes sense to rehome him, but i just can't do it at the momment, i'm hoping this might improve in time, any encouragement will be appreciated.

Hi Jay
It is very hard to think about giving the puppy up, i suffer realy bad at the momment, its been two weeks now, and it has been very difficult.
What symptoms do you and your wife get, is it all the time in the house even when you are not by your puppy.
Im going to try allepet, the stuff you rub on your puppy, which is surpose to help cut down the allergens comming of the puppy.
Ive had to order it online, they don't sell it here in England, so i will have to wait for that to come.
Ive tried doing everything i can, and read about doing, to keep my puppy, i hope allepet helps.
I think we will come to a point when we will know what to do, we will be only able to take so much, keep trying all you can to help yourselfs and do the enviroment stuff in your house that Lucys web site says, and see if it improves, it may take a bit of time, to see if we can improve, if it just gets to much then we will have to part with our beautiful puppies, but least we know that we had tried our very best.
I hope it works out for us.

Hello, could you tell me if your syptoms have gotten any better? I just got a new puppy and am having some of the same problems. I break out in a horrible itchy rash on my arms when I hold him, and this morning I'm sneezing like crazy and my eyes are swollen, and I've noticed I'm wheezing a little bit. I'm willing to try anything, I do not want to get rid of the little guy, it will crush me! Any advice would be great!!!

Hi Tammy
Im sorry to hear your struggling with new puppy, i don't think there is much improvement, but im still trying to hold on to him, and trying out everything that might help, i can't part from him even though i have horrible allergies.
I take antihistamine twice a day, which help a bit with icting, but it does not help my throat or sinuses, and i have used Petal Cleanse or Allepet which you rub on them and thats surpose to help, you can order it over the internet or the chemist can order it for you.
Im trying to eat better vegetables and fruit to try a boost my immune system.
Im in the same dilemma, and don't know what to do yet, im hopeing i will get use to him, but i don't know if you can, its terrible being in this situation, when you love the dog.
Go to you doctor and ask him to try you on antihistamines meds, you might have to try a few differant ones to find one that helps, and try all the things Lucy recommends on this site.
Sorry i can't help any more than this, i will email you if i do start to improve.
Good luck

Oct 27th, 2006 - 2:29 AM Re: allergy to new puppy

Hi guys, I am having the same problem as you, I think I may be allergic to my new baby pug dog. Its breaking my heart and I simply cannot part with him. I've waited so long to get him and we've bonded so well, it'd kill me to have give him back to the breeder - its just not an option.

Since he arrived on Monday I've been wheezing and my skins been a bit itchy, although I don't have the trademark runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing or rash or anything. My hands were itchy today but I've applied some handcream and it seems to have settled. I bathed my boy with tea tree shampoo and I've been wiping him with anti-allergen pet wipes. I've ordered an anti-allergen room spray and Petal Cleanse and pray to God it works for me. I'll be sure to let you all know how I get on.

When I went to view my puppy a few weeks ago I spent 3 hours at the breeders house holding all the puppies and playing with her other 12 adult pugs. I didn't have any allergy symptoms at all that day or in the days that followed. I am totally baffled and am wondering if this little guy is the cause of the symptoms.

I have owned a Springer Spaniel (which are meant to be high allergen dogs), other dog breeds, birds, rodents etc and have never had any problems in the past. My mother has Shih Tzu who I can cuddle for hours and have no problems with, even if he licks me or accidentally wee's on the floor and I clean it. I am so upset about this and its spoiling my enjoyment of my new puppy. My husband and 3 year old son seem to be unaffected - just me.

Please, please if anyone can recommend anything that might help me (no matter how silly it sounds) I'd be so grateful. I've suffered from depression for 3 years and since I've gotten this little guy I feel as though I've made a breakthrough in the short time I've had him.

Good luck all you guys, I hope you can tolerate your new pets, I know how hard it is to think about letting them go.

Please try Petal Cleanse room spray and Petal Cleanse for dogs...it helped me soooo much! Now I don't have to take antihistamines at all ! Its amazing stuff and my dogs coat is beautiful after I wipe him with the lotion. Even when Barney's casting really heavily I still have no symptoms. I dont suppose the previous occupants of your new place had cats or any other animals you may be allergic to? Good luck!

Are Shih Tzu's considered a low dander dog? Do they shed alot and are they good with kids? My son really wants a dog but has asthma and allergies. My husband has allergies and asthma so I sympathize with your son. Anyway, two days ago we brought home a shih tzu and he is completely in love with it...but he is having some problems. The first day we blamed it on the fact that it just came from the pet store and had other animals on. I bathed it the next morning and he said he thought it was a little better but this morning he was wheezing slightly and after coming home for a 1/2 hour lunch he called and said he was sneezing and had a runny nose when he got back to work but it was getting better now that he wasn't in the house....of course I was vaccuming and dusting EVERYTHING before he got home (trying to help him) and that probably stirred things up and that could have been part of the problem. He said he will give it an entire month so we know for sure if it the dog or other factors contributing it. We were also told at the pet store once you get acclimated to Shih tzu's the symptoms should lessen since they are low dander dogs. I'm starting to get skeptical and of course heartbroken. You can e-mail me in a few weeks and I can let you know how its going since we are going through it right now.

In general, Shih Tzus are not considered low allergy dogs. They have a double-coat. I personally am very allergic to Shih Tzus. Their long double-coat can also harbor other allergens, e.g. pollen from outside. Your best bet is to bathe your Shih Tzu frequently and keep the coat clipped short.

A single coated breed, like Maltese, is usually a better choice for dog allergic people.

Sep 1st, 2005 - 1:33 PM Re: Shih Tzu's and allergies

Here's where we are with our shih tzu now. I called my husband's allergist and asked him what he could suggest short of getting rid of the dog. He told me to keep our room as clean as possible and keep the dog out. I did that and put an air cleaner in there and he said to have bare floors so we're taking the carpet out (what a great excuse to FINALLY get rid of the ugly carpet and get hard wood floors!) Anyway, that seems to have helped a lot already, he could breathe normally by the time he got up in the morning and the next day being in the rest of the house didn't bother him as much. The allergist said that because he got to breathe "pure" air he built up a tolerance. He also said when the pollen count goes down outside he will probably have an easier time as well. He has never really taken his meds but he started taking one zyrtec a day. The doctor said after about 7 days (4 more) they should really start to help his system. He also said to reduce other allergens...dust mites in particular and use some allergen reducers on the dog. We ordered products for both things and are hopeful they'll help a lot. I should have a good update by the end of next week.

Sep 9th, 2005 - 8:16 AM Re: Shih Tzu's and allergies

Things haven't been going so well with my husband and our shih tzu...hubby's asthma has been getting a little out of control...not major but enough to where I don't want to see him suffering. Yesterday, however we received our order of allertech spray to treat the furniture and carpets and the allerpet-d for the dog. I did the house yesterday afternoon and coated the dog with the allerpet. Last night, hubby had NO trouble breathing at all and even had the dog sitting on his chest for a good hour while it napped so we're hopeful. I guess we'll have to wait and see if the stuff keeps working or if it was only really effective because things were just done with it. We also ordered a highpowered hepa filter air purification system so we're hoping the three things combined will make a big difference. I have to hand it to my husband, he's really making a full-fledged effort for this dog. I'll post back when we have more updates.

The list of allergy breeds on the previous post is a fair guide, but is not reliable for every person. Each person can react differently to each breed. Example - the first dog on the "low dander" list is the basenji - this is a lovely dog which I adopted and had to return because I was covered with hives before I got it home. Take your mom to a local rescue center and have her select a dog. Have her play with it for at least a half hour to see if she reacts to it. For my allergies, the hound family is the worst and the soft coated dogs are the best, but each person is different. Good Luck!

Jul 16, 07 - 8:09 AM Small hives from new dog

I got a new dog a few days ago from an animal shelter. He was very dirty and on the way home in the car I began to get hives on my lap because he was sitting on me. I bathed him as soon as I got home but everytime I play with him I get small hives where he has touched my skin. I'm wondering if he still might have lots of dander from other dogs and be dirty from being a stray. He shed an immense ammount on the first day and it seems like he hasn't been groomed in a long time. I am wondering if he just has excess dander because of of the shelter and his time as a stray and if my hives will eventually go away. He doesn't cause me any other allergic symptoms. I also live with two chihuahua mixes who I don't react to at all. I don't know what breed he is. At the shelter they told me he is a chihuahua mix. I think he might be part min pin as well. Has anyone else experienced this with a shelter dog? Do you have any suggestions for what I can do to stop the hives? Thanks.

Aug 8th, 2007 - 3:02 PM Re: Small hives from new dog

For 30+ years we have always gotten our dogs from a shelter. After you have bathed him and gotten him onto a regular dog food he should be stable. Try a 2nd bath and brush him out well. The fact that you have similar coated dogs should mean he would not bother you. See if you can tell whether you are reacting to his coat (dander) or his saliva. Have someone else pick him up and have him lick your neck. If you get hives there it could be just his saliva. Is his fur stiffer than your other dogs? It could be just the texture of the fur rather than dander. Other than antihistimine and long sleeve shirts I am not sure what else you could do about it. Good Luck!

Jun 14, 07 - 4:11 AM Second-hand Allergy?

My brother is coming to visit with his family this weekend. He told me this week that he believes his son is allergic to dogs (I have 4). My question, can you get a rash from contact with someone who has had contact with a dog (in other words, no direct contact with the dog!). Any help would be appreciated! My guess is that it's possible his son's rash is from something else, since I visited him less than 2 months ago and his son didn't get a rash from contact with me. In any event, I want their stay to be long and pleasant! Help! And Thank you!

Aug 8th, 2007 - 3:20 PM Re: Second-hand Allergy?

Unfortunately, yes it is possible to react to dog allergies without direct contact. It depends on the sensitivity of the allergic individual and the amount of "dog" on the carrier. Dander is microscopic, so even if you do not have dog hair on your clothes you can still be a dander carrier. The good news is that each individual person will only be allergic to specific breeds. I have no reaction to many breeds, a slight reaction to some and severe reactions to breeds in the hound family. If the son has allergies, there are plenty of things he could get a rash from other than dogs. I hope they can enjoy their stay and be able to play with the dogs!
