Relatives with dogs/cats
My mom and sister now have dogs and cats (which I'm allergic to) at their homes. I suffer from asthma when I visit them and I just don't want to do it anymore. They seem to think that there is something I can take so I can visit them without getting sick. Is there? I have tried over the counter allergy meds without success.

Help! my grandson is allergic to my dogs! Or is he?
I have 5 dogs (in the house). When my grandson was born, he came to visit at a few months old with no allergy problems. Then we threw my new husbands Golden Retriever in the mix and he came to visit again. On the ride home he started coughing and his eyes watered terribly. My son & daughter-in-law thinks he's allergic to my husbands Golden. They haven't come to visit since--and it's been a year now. Any thoughts on this from anyone?

Re: I REALLY WANT A DOG
I am allergic to dogs also. I find that I do better around smaller dogs since they produce less dander. But, your dad is just going to have to be around the specific breeds to see what kind of reactions he has. And try to be around ADULT dogs. Puppies are going to have less dander and can give a negative allergic reaction when the adult could make him sneeze. I had a schnauzer when I was growing up and I'm getting a Maltese now. They say that a Giant Schnauzer has lower dander levels. Thats a rather large dog. Maybe look into those??

Re: I REALLY WANT A DOG
Hi everyone! I reply to this topic because there's no point to start a new one because I'm going to talk the same subject which is...
I really want a dog.
All my life I have been wanting a dog but my mom has never let me to have one. 4 years ago I found out that I'm allergic to dogs. My heart just broke.
Now I'm moving to my own apartment and I have started wondering: can I finally have a dog? Could I cope with one?
Then found this website. I red the list of the products which maybe relief allergy and the other list which advised how to make my home as hypo allergic as possible. Best thing is that I found out that Chinese crested is one of the lower dander breeds. I was so happy because I have always liked that breed.
I have been thinking of getting every product what is recommended in this website (hepa air purifier, Allerpet d for dogs, washable dog bed, hepa vacuum cleaner). I already have a salt pipe (try this! It helps breathing). And I'm going to organise my home so it will be easy to clean and no dogs allowed to a bedroom!
I have really thought this through and thought every possible way to make my home as hypo allergic as possible but still I can't decide what to do. I cannot help thinking that I'm the most selfish person on earth if I get a dog even though I'm allergic. But not getting a dog will break my heart over and over again. *tears*
Sometimes I really think that I really, really could do this and get along just fine with the little dog. But I can't stop thinking what if my allergic as going to get worse or what if I get asthma? Is it really worth to risk my health? I have been thinking this hard and I have asked couple of my relatives could they take my dog if I can’t keep it.
I have also been thinking that I'm allergic to dust mites as well so if my allergic get worse it may be because of dust mites not because of the dog, right? It may get worse even if I never get a dog.
Please give me your opinions!
(Sorry my bad English)

Re: I REALLY WANT A DOG
Hiya, My hubby is allergic to dogs. We really want one. I have done a bit of research on different low dander dog breeds. My husband is not allergic to huskies. They are big dogs, but I have been told that they make poor house pets. On further investigation I found Native American Indian Dogs. These are beautiful dogs that look similar to huskies, they are big. Unfortunately they are bred in America and Canada, they don't export and we stay Scotland. We have visited a few breeders of different dogs we liked the look of. A good breeder will be happy to let you visit a few times to check how your allergies react. We are on the waiting list for a Hungarian Puli pup now. They have a wool coat and non allergic saliva (as far as hubbies skin reaction was concerned.) We will keep the coat quite short as this will lower dander retention in this breeds textured coat. Regular bathing is also recommended. I hope this helps with your dads wish for a big dog.

Re: I REALLY WANT A DOG
As a cat and dog allergy sufferer, I have found that different breeds will affect my allergies differently, some will give me a full on allergic reaction, and some are less severe. I have a friend who has a German Sheppard, and I can not even step foot in his house without immediately sneezing and wheezing. I don't even bother trying to visit him there anymore, its absolutely miserable. My mother's rat terrier usually bothers my allergies pretty severely also. Ive owned a chihuahua in the past and my allergy symptoms stayed surprisingly mild! But alas! The health care facility I work at recently adopted a Maltese/****-zu mix therapy dog. We have had her for almost 3 weeks now, and I have given her lots of loving and attention without a single symptom yet. Amazing! I know its probably too good to be true and Ill probably start seeing symptoms soon, but compared to the other breeds this is nothing. Be patient, it is possible you will find a dog that works for you.

Just got a dog and I am allergic
Hi, we just got a dog after my 8 year old son begging for over 2 years. I am allergic to dogs, but was hoping it would not be so bad if I got a more hypo-allergenic dog. We got a Maltipoo and everyone loves him -- he is 3 months old.
The first day, I was fine, but the second day I started having asthma. I have only had the dog for 8 days and I am still having trouble. Some days are better than others. I am taking Advair 500 twice a day, Singular at night, Claritin once/day, and my rescue inhaler as needed. I am supopsed to start allergy shots but the allergist won't start them until my breathing symptoms are greatly improved.
I have a sister who will take the dog temporarily if I need so that I can start on the shots and see how they work, but she works all day and I am sad to leave the puppy gated in her house for that many hours. I see now that he needs a lot of attention and shouldn't be left for more than a couple of hours at a time.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I am not sure what to do at this point. I would like to make this work somehow but can't deal with the breathing struggles. It does scare me.
Thanks,
Kate

Beagle-VS-Jack Russell
We have had a Jack Russell Terrier for 7 years I have had no problems. Six months ago a Beagle entered our home and I have had a number of sinus problems. i Went to the allergist yesterday and was tested and it showed I am allergic to dogs. My question is, is it the breed I am allergic to, or the doubled amount of dander?

Desperate! 3 year old with allergies
Hi all. My son has been diagnosed with many allergies. He is 3 years old and has been seeing an allergist since 15 months, due to hives, rashes, and all the common symptoms associated with allergies.
When he started preschool, I was always getting notified of his rashes and hives. I took him back to the allergist, and they tested him for chemical allergies. He had allergies to FOUR of the chemicals!!! The chemicals are most commonly found in: sunscreens, shampoos, dyes, hena ink, rubber, synthetic leathers, hair color, adhesives, bandaids, latex, hospital tubes, play tattoos, etc.
He was also tested for more common allergies, and we found out he was highly allergic to dogs, cats & dust mites.
dogs = level 3
cats = level 4
dust mites = level 4
Explaining to family and friends how allergic he really was, well...it was a battle. I'm still trying to explain to them that he CANNOT be around these animals!
This weekend, he spent the weekend with aunts and uncles on his dad's side. Well, they didn't remove the dog from the house. Despite his daily meds (Zyrtec in morning, Flonase 2x/day, Claritin in the evening), he had a reaction.
When I picked him up on Saturday afternoon, he was constantly clearing his throat. I immediately gave him a dose of Benadryl, but it did nothing to help. So, we ended up making a trip to the ER, where they found that his throat was swelling. His lungs were okay. Today, 24 hours later, he is STILL clearing his throat and complaining that "there's a frog in there". He is very itchy as well.
He started oral steroids this morning.
ADVICE PLEASE????

Re: Desperate! 3 year old with allergies
Is he too young to start allergy shots? Otherwise I don't know what else to suggest. He might grow out of some of the allergies. Also make sure you have no carpeting in your house and that his room has no drapes. Use blinds instead. Keep stuffed animals out of his bedroom and I'd suggest putting hepa air cleaners throughout the house.
With regards to your relatives; if they have an animal in their home, removing the animal even while your son is there will not help because the dander is still in the house. It takes 4 months of daily cleaning to remove all dander from a house. So even if they had removed the dog, he still most likely would have had the same reaction!! My advice is to not allow your son to go over to those relatives with animals. It stinks, I know. I dealt with that my whole life. Plan on inviting his friends to your house as most folks have animals.
That frog in his throat is very mild asthma. It's not worth him being sick because of unfeeling relatives. You owe it to him to be his voice and say no. He cannot be allowed to stay over your relative's houses, even if they remove the dog while he's there. I can't emphasize this enough! Just tell them and your hubby no. Asthma is extremely serious. Do you want to risk his life just to please your relatives? Yes, I said his life.

beagle
I just adopted a beagle and I am having a steady, mild allergic symptom (phlegm, tickle in the throat/chest). My sons have each reacted, but not consistently. We never had any problems with our previous dog, a cockapoo. I am faced with deciding whether to keep or get rid of this beautiful little dog. I've only had him a week, and figure if I have to give him up, better sooner than later. I do not want to have to worry about how to combat this; I just want another companion with no calculations about hand-washing, medication, and all.
Any advice?

Re: beagle
Yes a cockapoo is a dog that many are not allergic to because some don't shed. It's obvious you got one that didn't shed . Beagles SHED-lots. However, be careful about getting another cockapoo since some of them do shed. I would suggest looking through the list at www.sweet-lucys.com for advice on which dogs are best for allergy sufferers. I have been allergic my whole life. I can pet and even stay in the house for several hours with dogs like cockapoos, maltese, havenese, etc, but if they came to live with me, I'd start with allergy symptoms. Because of that, I got an American Hairless Terrier.

HIVES!!!
Hi-
We have a PitBull that we inherited about a year ago.
We are in love with this dog.
There are three of us in the house and yet it is only me that is suffering from hives and have been on and off for well...about a year(same time dog arrived).
I refuse to believe it is the dog (denial).
I know it is something else.
Someone told me that there is a vitamin you can give your dog to break down the acids in their saliva,
and thus...no more hive for owners.
This person can't remember what vitamin
Has anyone heard of such an easy remedy?
Please let me know... I will be scratching away here
and miserable in the meantime.:)
Thanks- Teresa

Re: HIVES!!!
I bought a boxer about 6 months ago, and when his paws brushed against my skin when we were playing rough, my skin would break out in bumps, which would take an hour or more to go away. I also had extremely allergic reactions such as watering eyes, sneezing, etc. Unfortunately I had to return the dog to the previous owner.
Up until that time, I had never been allergic to any pet ever, a cat, a dog, nothing.
I thought I would give it another try and I recently got another boxer, from the same breeder. while I do not have all of the allergic symptons as the previous dog, I still do get bumps on my arms, in large quantities, when I brush against his skin.
has anybody else experienced this?
I know it's not the breed because I've watched my buddies boxer for a period of two weeks before and none of these symptons occured.
any thoughts?

I've owned 6 dogs, never had a problem with long haired dogs. My boxer and pitbull would give me little red bumps when brushed up on arm and leg many times the red bumps would go away. sometimes they would scab up and be painful to the touch. It's strange why sometimes my skin would scab up, and other time it wouldn't. why short haired dogs and not long hair?

Re: HIVES!!!
As a long time allergy sufferer, I have to let you know that it most likely IS the dog. I'm sorry to say so. What most people don't understand is that allergies develop over time. You don't start off allergic to a substance, but instead, if you are sensitive, the more you are exposed to whatever it is (in this case a dog), the more likely you are to develop symptoms. To the person who has watched his friend's boxers that is the reason you are now developing symptoms. I wouldn't mess around with hives as they can develop into life threatening symptoms if they get into your throat. Yes that can happen. There is no vitamin that will work.
The best you can try is to bathe the dog frequently, use a hepa filter, clean your house DAILY, (including wiping down walls, floors, etc) and using something like Allerpet on your dog. Also try antihistimine. Good luck to you as I know how heartbreaking this can be.

still allergic after washing machine?
I am allergic to dogs and don't own them. My friend, Katie has a gorgeous German Shepard named Charlie and she's wonderful.
Katie recently moved and gave me her old electric blanket. Although it is covered in dog hair I have washed it (twice) in the washing machine at the highest temperature allowed with mild, scent free detergent.
I'm wondering whether I will be allergic to this blanket even after washing, considering it hasn't come in contact with a dog in almost a year. I don't want to lie all night on it only to wake up in hives, etc.
Any help with this issue would be VERY much appreciated as winter is coming on fast here and it gets really cold at night!

Dont get a dog if your family member has allergies!
As a chronic sufferer of allergies to All animals, those of you who do not have allergies and are considering letting your husband, child, or boyfriend suffer because YOU want a pet, PLEASE DONT DO IT!
Your loved one will be miserable, even though they pretend like it is ok. They will do anything to keep the family pet to make you happy and not feel guilty about needing to get rid of it. Do you think it is fair that your loved one takes medication on a daily basis so you can keep your dog? I wish you could see what it is like to be sneezing 1000 times a day, itching all over, and unable to breathe in your own home. Its horrible! And yet the allergy sufferer feels guilt and embarrassed over being allergic! My relationship is about to end because of my allergies and I urge you to reconsider getting an animal if you truly value your loved one. ITS NOT WORTH IT!

Re: Dont get a dog if your family member has allergies!
Finally! People who understand! I was diagnosed with asthma in 1993, and my husband was diagnosed in 1991. This year, my attacks have been so severe that I have developed almost chronic asthmatic bronchitis and I am on four different medications to control my symptoms. My husband sees an allergist regularly also, get shots and takes three different medications. Nothing seems to relieve our dog allergies, and since we've known for nearly 15 years that we are allergic to pet dander and it triggers our asthma attacks, we have never owned a pet even though we love animals. BUT, our family doesn't get it! They keep getting dogs! My doctor has told me many times, and reminded me this week, to stay away from dogs, and now my mom-in-law is pitching a fit because I won't come visit on mother's day in her furry house. HELP! She says I should just take a pill! She can keep her pets. I understand that she loves them more than us. But, it kills me that she keeps behaving like this is a new development, that we are the enemy, that we are making excuses. Has anyone out there convinced family members that they are indeed allergic to dogs? I feel like I need a doctor's note to get out of visitation! I am so sad and frustrated, and she is refusing to compromise on another location. Well, I refuse to die this week!

Yep I've had the same situation. My husband didn't understand when we went to visit his family. I'd wind up with asthma and he'd be angry at me for wanting to leave to get out of the situation, so I'd go sit alone in the car while he'd socialize.
BTW: he's about to be my ex. If the person is insensitive about your getting physically ill, than most likely they're insensitive about other issues. Good riddance to him!

Re: Dont get a dog if your family member has allergies!
I have severe allergies to all kinds of animals with fur such as cats, dogs, rabbits, and even horses. Growing up we had dogs, cats, kittens, rabbits, frogs, fish, birds and any other kind of animal you can bring into your home. I suffered so bad during my childhood. I would always be sneezing and swollen with hives. It was a terrible experience. My son has also been diagnosed with severe allergies to lots of things including cats but he tested negative for dogs. For his 8th birthday my husband got him a Bichon Poodle mix. I had not had any allergic reactions to this dog at all.

Re: Dont get a dog if your family member has allergies!
Oh this is all so true. I have posted a message on this board and visited this site for the first time. I have been so miserable for the past year since I bought my son a dog. Not thinking that I may be allergic to it - I had no idea! I already had asthma but I had two cats and seemed to rub along ok with them? But have I? .... because I have had these cats for 5 years and I would say my asthma has got worse over the past 5 years and particularly over the past year. I have had an allergy test but it came back ok for allergy to cats and dogs? but i don't understand this because I am convinced that it is the dog that is making matters worse. Do you know of any other tests I can have because until my 18 and 17 year old kids are told in black and white that I am allergic they will not rehome the dog they just tell me to loose weight and get fit.

Re: Dont get a dog if your family member has allergies!
I completely agree! For me, even just being in the same house as a dog or a cat is terrible. I can't even go over to someone's house if they have a cat or dog because ten minutes after I get there I'll be sneezing, my eyes and nose will be itching, and I'll be itchy all over from just being in the general vicinity! I can't even imagine how miserable I'd be living in the same house as a dog or cat.

I feel you guys. I am terrible allergic to Dogs but no one seems to understand or care. I simply CAN NOT breathe when I am in a house with dogs. For some reason people like to act like your overreacting or whatever. Oh, and lets not mention that like 90% of all people have dogs in their house. Nothing has gave any relief for me. Not pills or shots or whatever. Any suggestions?

Yeah, but what if you don't have asthma. What if you only have itchy throat, itchy eyes, sneezing, cough...etc, but if you do not have terribly bad allergies, are you still eligible for a dog?

I know what you mean. It sucks! I wish people would understand instead of acting like they know more about my own medical condition and history than I do. Too many people in this world think that allergies to dog simply don't exist or are not as bad as they are. If a significant other can't understand and chooses the dog over you, than good riddance to them. You are to be #1 in that person's life, and if they can't do it not, who's to say they will do it later?

Re: Dont get a dog if your family member has allergies!
When I was younger I didn't have allergies to dogs. But from around age 29, and I am now 31 I have been getting asthma type attacks from them. I can hardly be in the same room with a big dog (like our 4 year old yellow lab) or i will start sneezing, watery eyes, and worst of all I cant freaking Breath. Our dog, we keep in the back of the house if hes even in the house. If he gets into our main living area or room, nooo!, which he did today - and my lovely wife did not mention it to me or change the sheets to our bed - because our dog apparently got onto the bed too! - And so now I have been up since 1am wheezing and barley able to breath, while she sleeps peacefully
Our cats don't seem to bother me which seems weird to me? but I might have to get rid of the dog. I don't want to but it seems like it is getting worse.
Went to my parents house the other day they have a total indoor dog (Medium Australian Shepherd) and i was getting symptoms, so I took an allergy pill that my dad has and it usually works for a few hours but this time it only worked for about 30 minutes and then i couldn't breath again, so we had to leave.
So I totally relate. And cant express it enough what you have said, Quote: "Dont get a dog if your family member has allergies!".
Thank you

boyfriend allergic to dogs
I never knew anyone allergic to dogs till I met my boyfriend. He chose me as his girlfriend even though he knew I owned a dog. (Chinese crested powerpuff). It hurts me when he says, "when is the dog going to die, or he'll say, "when are you going to get rid of the dog." He stops when I say it hurts me when he says that. My dog is nearly 9 years old now. I owned the dog before I met him. I can't get rid of her. I do have a spare room where the dog doesn't go into. My boyfriend doesn't live with me. Though he plans to later on and talking about engagement and marriage in a couple years and moving in then.
I have read some of the postings from allergy sufferers. Yes, it is hard for us to get rid of our animals. But I had this animal before I met him. I have only been seriously involved with him now for 3 months. Known him for a year. Try to think about some of us that do really care. I do care. But I don't go around telling people to get rid of their pets for my sake. I don't have carpet, I have an air cleaner. When I suggest trying other things, he says, "oh, no, you don't need to do that." Look at what you say to your relatives you allergy sufferers. Do they try a little to help you out with any effort. If they do, please welcome it and thank them.

Re: boyfriend allergic to dogs
Just to add what I wrote above: I ordered some more products to see if it would help on cutting down on the dog dander. This is a good website. Will post if there is success. The good thing is that the Chinese crested powderpuff,(the dog I have) the hair version of the hairless has less dander cause bf says he isn't reacting as much as he has to other dogs of other breeds such as the chihauhau or boxers.

Dander-free room in house with dogs?
Hi everyone,
I am interested in people's experiences trying to keep a "dander-free room" in a house with dogs. My question has two parts:
1. If dogs have been living for two years in a room with a carpet, will steamcleaning the carpet and washing down all the walls of the room get rid of the dander? Or would I be kidding myself if I tried to do this because the dander will be so soaked into the carpet that even steamcleaning won't get it out?
2. Assuming the room *can* be cleaned, how likely is it that it will stay mostly dander free? I'm thinking about dander that will come in on the soles of shoes, or on clothing that has been in the rest of the house, or even just how much dander is there free-floating in the air that will end up in that room? In other words, even if no dogs come into the room, does it really make a difference?
I welcome your experiences trying to keep a room that is dog-free -- was it dander-free? How did it work out?
Thanks everyone,
- Ellen

Is there a dog urine blood or other test?
My daughter & I want a dog in the worst way. I was told by a worker at the local shelter that you can be tested for dog hair, dander, saliva and urine. We have been getting shots for about 6 months and we got a maltizhu. The breeder said he was purebred between maltese and shihtzu. She also said he mostly took after the shih tzu dad which was from another breeder. My daughter had absolutely no reaction to him. I, on the other hand, got itchy, post nasal drip, sinusitis, and headaches to beat the band! The breeder finally returned my phone calls and since we had her write we could get a refund, we were able to return him. However, we were all emotionally heartbroken. The breeder told me I'll probably never be able to have a dog since even though the itching went away, the sinuses got worse.
I just had two blood tests done. One for dander--negative & one for hair--pending. I had my face in the dog's face and I felt fine. The lab that did the bloodwork said they called the main office & there's no test for urine or saliva? Anyone know?

What is the difference b/w a skin test for allergies and a blood test? Do they test for different things.
I seem to be allergic to some, but not all dogs. Can I determine before we get a dog what to look for or stay away from?

My daughter was recently tested for allergies because she has allergy symptoms, headaches and dizziness. She tested negative to dogs and cats. She tested positive to dust mites, a little to feathers and one kind of mold. She is pretty stuffed up, and I don't know that the allergy medicine is working all that well. It may still be too soon to tell. We did buy a new mattress and box spring and encase it. I bought a hypo-allergenic pillowcase and protector and washed all the bedding in hot water. We have started cleaning stuff out of her room. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum which does have a HEPA filter. Here's the thing. We own four dogs. She would be devastated if she were allergic to dogs. So how reliable is conventional skin ***** allergy testing performed in an allergy MD's office anyway? I tried to Google about reliability and couldn't find anything. Would staying away from the dogs for 2 days be enough to tell? I was thinking of going to a hotel perhaps. Thanks in advance for any advice or thoughts.

Any Chance of a dog
My 12 year old son tested +6 to dog allergy and we had a 20lb terrier mix for 11 years. He developed the allergy after we had the dog for many years. He tolerated our dog well but was very reactive to other dogs. Our dog recently died and I have been able to take him off of antihistamines with the exception of days he goes to friend's homes with dogs or cats. He has been taking allergy shots for 6 mons and will need 23 more weeks before he will be on maintenance. I also know there is no guarantee of the shots working. Does anyone think I have a shot of getting a dog without putting him on antihistamines? His reaction to dogs typically ranges from a drippy nose to asthma after 1 hr. I have researched many breeds including ahts (we have not allergy tested yet)but I am concerned about what happens after one month or so when the dogs is in the home.

Dog Allergy
Hi,
We are getting a dog in the next month or so and although my son has been treated for mild asthma, I did not think this would be a problem as he has never had a reaction to a dog. He is around my friend's labradoodle loads and also spent a lot of time at my parents as a baby / toddler with their two dogs (mongrels) and also another friends labrador and has not had any problem.
Any thoughts / advise welcome.
Thanks

Considering... Pitbull/Bulldog mix
My husband is trying to talk me into getting a Pitbull/Bulldog mix, but I'm not sure. I know that I am allergic to some dogs more than others. My most recent reaction was after an encounter with a Boston Terrier. Does anyone know anything about these breeds? I can't find any useful info online.

Allergy Shots?
Has anyone ever tried allergy shots to desensitize themselves against dog allergies? Does it work or am I waisting my time? I was never allergic to dogs as a child but now I am a +3 out of 4 for allergy testing. I really want to get my 4.5 toy poodle back and I am willing to do anything for her. Any ideas out there?

Re: Allergy Shots?
Allergy shots are incredible - and have made a huge difference in my life. I can go to houses that have dogs and not get violently ill, and I've only been doing them about six months (though I did them once when I was younger).
However, it's not a perfect fix-it - and it requires dedication. To truly help, you have to keep doing them for years, and you need to go into the doctor's office in order to get the highest-concentration shots they can give.

Re: Allergy Shots?
I wish I could have a dog but can't because of my severe allergies. I have had allergy shots almost weekly for around five years and can just tell you my experience. While they helped immensely with allergens such as trees, grass, and mold, they did not help with my cat/dog allergies at all. In fact, my dog allergies have gotten even worse over the years. While these results do not happen to everyone, allergy shots are worth it, but don't always work for everything. I guess I'll never get a dog. :( I do encourage you to pursue them though, as they do work for a lot of other people, and did for me for my other allergies!

Will my allergies to dogs ever go away?
All of my childhood I have owned Golden Retrievers. Usually up to 3 adult Golden Retrievers at a time. I never had allergies. As an adult I deiced not to get a dog until I had a backyard big enough for them to play in. It's been 6 years now and I'm finally ready for a dog but, now I've developed allergies to dogs. My heart is broken because I am a huge animal lover. I read once that you can develop allergies to dogs from lack of exposure (Which would make since in my case because I haven't had a dog in over 6 years). I also read that once your body has gotten use to dogs again then your body becomes immune and you no longer have allergies. Now I know this might not be true for everyone but, is it true for some? Or is that just wishful thinking on my part.
Please Reply input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Airlines
I have been allergic to dogs for 30 years. Because I am older my doctor tells me the best thing is to avoid dogs. I just found out that Southwest Airlines (the last airline that services the east coast) will now take dogs and cats in the cabin of the plane. Please if any of you are allergic to dogs or cats write to them before this policy takes place in mid June. Every airline in the USA will now take pets in the cabin with the only exception of Frontier Airlines which only flies in the west. Help!!!!!

Immunotherapy?? Give up dogs?? Help please... 6 yr old allergic!
Help please! My 6 yr old is allergic to dogs, cats, spring trees, mold and dust mites. She has severe eczema over her entire body. We have 2 dogs. A beagle and a Yellow Lab. We use a HEPA filter in our furnace, have room HEPA filters in 2 bedrooms and the family room. The dogs are not allowed in the bedrooms, or on the furniture. We vaccuum at least 4 times a week.
She is on 3 antihistamines a day, one helps her sleep at night. Moisturizers 2x a day, steroid creams once to twice a day, nasal spray and benadryl as needed. She is still constantly itching.
Will immunotherapy help? She doesn't want to get rid of her dogs..... OR is immunotherapy going to be hurtful (pain and time wise) to her, and not end up giving her the freedom from itching and pain?
Please chime in with your opinions!
I need to help her!

Re: Immunotherapy?? Give up dogs?? Help please... 6 yr old allergic!
Shots can be an enormous help - they've certainly helped me - and I think they're the right way to go regardless of whether you keep the pets, making your child's life easier and her health stronger. I cannot recommend them enough.
That said, your child has severe allergies, and it is unlikely that she will be able to live with those animals - at least not for a while. I truly sympathize with this situation, but I think you should at the very least look at having them stay with family or good friends for a while. Having been through a similar situation (but in reverse), I wish that my own mother had made the difficult decision in favor of my health and saved me years of chronic asthma, allergies, and ear and sinus infections.

Australian Labradoodle
Has anyone with dog allergies/asthma had experience with or own an Australian Labradoodle. Everything I read on-line says they're great dogs for people with allergies and were bred specifically as therapy dogs for people who otherwise couldn't have a therapy dog. I am planning on meeting one next week but just thought I'd see if there's anyone who can share their experience.
Thanks.

Re: Australian Labradoodle
I got an Australian Labradoodle two weeks ago. I was fine for the first week or so. Now, I am runny nosed and asthmatic (more than usual). I am starting shots in two days. The breeder has offered to take the dog back. That would break all our hearts, but it is nice to know that option is possible.
My dog allergy showed up on one skin tests and not another several months ago. It was characterized as "mild" which is why I went ahead and got the dog. I had stuck my face in many a neighbor's dog as a test and was fine, but visiting a dog and living with one are different.
As for demeanor and smarts, this dog has it all. He is a sweety.
Best of luck. If you had your visit already, how did it go?

Re: Australian Labradoodle
Hi Melissa - I'm so sorry to hear about your situation. That sounds like what happened to me about two years ago. We adopted a cockapoo and after about a week, we couldn't keep her as my allergies worsened- stuffy nose and asthmatic as well. She now lives with a friend of ours and comes to visit and I don't react to her the way I did two years ago. I think it's because it's not for the length of time that it was when she was living with us.
Anyway, I hope this works out for you. Have you asked the breeder if she's had other people react to her dogs and what they ended up doing? I haven't met the Australian Labradoodle around here yet but I just found out that the woman who owns her takes Zertec daily for allergies. That was a little disappointing but I'll still go and meet the dog and see how it goes. I'm pretty sure I will react but who knows. I've also been getting shots for the past year and a half and I think they've improved my allergies but they're not gone completely.
Good luck. I hope it works out for you!

Re: Australian Labradoodle
Leslie,
I am sorry that you had to give up your cockapoo. It is nice that you can visit her though.
Things have been getting better for me since I wrote to you. I have a runny nose when I get my face in his fur or I brush the little guy (ha! he is 4 months and 27 lbs). But the asthma seems to have subsided. Thank God because I already take symbicort (inhaled steroid and bronchodilator) and singulair (pill for allergic asthma) and do sinus nasal washes. So, there is not much I am not already doing. I am not allowed to do the antihistamine stuff because of the type of lung disease that I have (called bronchiectasis).
If the shots don't work, I think I will still be okay. I also have started up a hepa filter in the living room and purchased this lotion called Petal Cleanse for the dog.
The breeder has a long blog on her website and one dog did once get returned for allergy issues.
The other thing of note is that my dog has curly fleece. It is totally non-shed, soft and not very thick. I was told that it is lower maintenance than the wool coat and picks up less dust and pollen. BUT the wool coat is likely better for pure dog allergy issues. I am way more allergic to dust so I figured this was the way to go.
Mostly, I picked him based on sweetness and mellowness, and I liked the breeder and price. She got some flack from other breeders when she priced this litter lower than the fixed 2.5 G due to the economy tanking.
Best of luck to you.

i tried it and its really just for the symptoms at hand and worked very well. the treatment took an hour or so and decongested me for about a day or two. but it hurt and was time consuming and it ran me $50. it was nice to try but not something that cured me or that i could actually do everyday. the paid, cost and time involved werent worth it. i am currently taking 2 claritin, sleeping in a clean room and waiting for my allergist appt next month.

Allergic to poodle mix- goldendoodle
A friend of mine just got a goldendoodle , and she said she is nausiated all of time and has itchy eyes. Her son said he wasn't feeling well as well. Does allerpet really work and should she try it? Any other suggestions? I've heard people can be more allergic to puppies than to the adult poodle mixes because they shed less as adults and their coat and skin becomes more poodle like. Should they wait it out and see?

Re: Allergic to poodle mix- goldendoodle
The best way to reduce allergens (dander) on a dog, is to give the dog frequent baths (maybe weekly) with a mild and non-drying dog shampoo. If you are allergic to the dog saliva, this won't help.

Re: Allergic to poodle mix- goldendoodle
Cough, tickly throat are definetly allergy symptoms. And Asthma as well. I think breeders shouldn't use the term hypoallergenic to refer to any poodle mix dog. There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. They all produce sticky substances in their urine, saliva and dander that trigger allergies.

Havanese touted as a truely hypoallergenic breed? or toy poodle?
I saw on a Havanese of Southern Cal website, the statement that someone was allergic to even a toy poodle they owned previously, but not to their new Havanese. I've seen that displayed on several websites. Given that Havanese are now very in vogue with the price tags to boot, of 1200- 2500 for a puppy it seems this might be all marketing. Does anyone have any experience with a havanese? We are fostering a toy poodle and are mildly allergic to it. But are wondering if we should purchase a havanese to save our rhinitis and allergies? Please any anedotal evidence welcome.

Getting a Toy poodle after failing with goldendoodle, bichon and maltese
Hi there,
I had two bichons for 10 years and sadly after having two kids, my allergies were triggered. Also my kids have dog allergies too. My bichons went to live with my sister and we all react when they come for a vist. We then tried a Goldendoodle because of all the hype on how hypoallergenic they are supposed to be. Not so. Within a few days we had post nasal drip and coughing so bad we had to return her to the breeder. I rescued and fostered a maltese and that was minimal reaction...we had him 3 months and it was almost tolerable. My allergist told me since then I am a plus 2 allergic to dogs. She also said some great advice I have found to be true: " Get the smalllest dog you can. Smaller dog equals less allergens." also she said the portugese water dog and poodles were the best though the biggest breeds too. So we are fostering a toy poodle next week! I am very excited because I think this may be the breed we can live with. He's not expected to be bigger than 5 lbs! I am also going to invest in a high quality air filter: the AlenA350 as recommended by consumer report. There is also a filter called: Pet Mate? Don't know if anyone has tried it? Supposed to target pet dander in the air.
What I think is sad is that it's kind of trial and error to find that breed or specific dog you aren't allergic to. It's luck really and chemistry I guess. Wish us luck!

Re: Getting a Toy poodle after failing with goldendoodle, bichon and maltese
We got a toy poodle about a year ago. I am a +3 allergic to dogs. After three months of having her my asthma got much worse. I had to give my dog to my sister for awhile. But in the meantime I am having allergy shots to desensitize me. My allergist said within 6 months I should feel better. Once I am on maintanance for a little while I can take her back. I am hoping it will work.

Re: Getting a Toy poodle after failing with goldendoodle, bichon and maltese
Well we brought home the toy poodle puppy and it's tiny, 8 weeks old and the size of a guinea pig. And by golly, my post nasal drip has started up again, and I'm horse again. I am doing immunotherapy and had done it for a few weeks but stopped over the holidays since we had the flu. I am so depressed! My daughter is 6 and seems to not be reacting, my son is a +2 to dogs like me and he's been more cranky and aggressive lately (he's three) and I think it's because he doesn't feel well. I know I feel congested and tired all the time. I don't know if I should keep the puppy more than a few weeks and see what happens. Is it possible we'll be less allergic once he gets his adult undercoat.
I hope your immunotherapy works out for you and you get your dog back.

Re: Getting a Toy poodle after failing with goldendoodle, bichon and maltese
It takes at least 6 months to see a difference with immonotheraphy. It is best if the dog is not in the home because chances of a severe reaction to the shots are greater. I had my dog for a visit for two weeks and I did fine after 3 months of shots, but when I had my next shot after that I had quite a severe reaction to it and It set me back a whole month. Give the shots a chance and see if you can have maybe a friend or relative take the dog for about 6 months why you go through theraphy. My allergist says that most people notice a difference in 6 months to a year. 6 months goes by fast. I wish you the best.

two weeks before allergies show up?
Question: I got a dog 4 weeks ago. 2 weeks ago, I started getting allergies. But it might also be pollen allergies, since it has been raining a lot and the trees tend to like that in California. The only problem with that theory is that I have found I often feel better when I go to friends' places without the dog. But then again, this may or may not be coincidental. I have often found that if I am focused on an activity, even pollen allergies will subside while I'm focused.
I had a friend who said that if I were allergic to dogs, I would have had symptoms almost immediately, especially during the first two weeks. Is it possible to have allergies to dogs show up after 2 weeks of exposure? Even if the dog has had baths once a week? [I live alone with the dog, so getting rid of the dog isn't really an option for me for 2 months to test it out. :P]
Thanks for your help. My itchy eyes appreciate it.

Each individual is different. What's true for one person's allergies is not necessarily true for someone else's allergies. Allergies may take years to develop.

Am I allergic to my sweet Papillon puppy? Please help!
As a child I had severe asthma, but at now at age 40 I've already had cats and dogs with no reaction. And no adult asthma ever. I recall being allergic to everything as a child. Still, I've been fine until now. About a month or so the hacking coughs started and now I'm finding it difficult to breath. One trip to the Dr. for inhalers and I'm worse so I need to go back. Could this be from my 8 month old long hair Pap puppy??? THX

I was allergic to dogs my whole life till I found the Papillon breed. Now I have 2 dogs and no allergies. Since the Papillons have no underfur it makes it easier with the dander.. also this dog does hardly have a "dog smell"... I love my 2 Papillons

hi,
maybe if you explain your situation to a local breeder of "non-allergic" dog, they may let you have a trial.
in my situation we homed a rescue and the dog was on trial anyway. they gave us longer because of my asthma to see if it would settle, but in fact became steadily worse. drawback is by then (3 weeks) it was totally heartbreaking putting him back :-(

My baby gets hives when our lab puppy licks him
My ds who is 14 months gets hives from our lab puppy. He had hives from a dog when he was little but then was exposed to the same dog and many others after and no hives.Took him with us to pick the puppy and was licked by the mother no hives,6 puppy's and no hives.
Bring our puppy home and ds has a llergic reaction to corn after that he had hives on his face when the puppy licked him(but only gets them on his face,he can be naked and no hives anywhere else)We though because puppy was on cheap food with corn that it was the corn.Changed foods over the course of 2 weeks. The hives were gone for about a week now they are back.Everytime he dog licks his face he gets them and they go away on there own within 10-20 minutes. If they go away so fast is this a true allergy or a sensitivity to beig slobbered. He used to get hives just from his socks lol.
He has no wheeziness, runninose or anything and I read usually babies do not have allergies to pets but develop them later on.If it is a allergy to saliva cna it get worse from us keeping te pup(Dh and I and are older kids(8&11)are in love with her)Could this not be a true allergy? I ahve 36 foods allergies and am allergic to cats and dogs(yet we have the puppy and 3 cats)I have never had hives leave so quickly and always need a antihistine yet ds`s go away on the own.

Re: my mom is allergic to dogs and cats
The list of allergy breeds on the previous post is a fair guide, but is not reliable for every person. Each person can react differently to each breed. Example - the first dog on the "low dander" list is the basenji - this is a lovely dog which I adopted and had to return because I was covered with hives before I got it home. Take your mom to a local rescue center and have her select a dog. Have her play with it for at least a half hour to see if she reacts to it. For my allergies, the hound family is the worst and the soft coated dogs are the best, but each person is different. Good Luck!

My Son
My son has been diagnosed to be allergic to dog dander. We have a dog, he stays in the garage at night and in the backyard during the day. We do walk the dog through the house to go out the back door in the morning. My son's room is right above the garage. Could this affect my son at all?
He has been getting sick to his stomach almost every month since we got the dog. My husband noticed that just before he got sick this week, he had itchy eyes, runny nose, & sneezing.
Whenever he is sick he has no fever. He vomits and complains of stomach cramps. We have two other children and no one else gets sick. So I was wondering if this has anything to do with the dog?

allergy to new puppy
I just got a new Border Collie puppy, he's now 12 weeks old, and he's beautiful.
since i have had him the past two weeks i have been getting a lot of allergy symptoms, really sore throat and difficulty in swallowing and sore glands, sinus pain in face and head and earache, itchy eyes and itching all over my body, plus burning tongue and when he licks me it burns.
I had a dog for 17 years, she died about 12 months ago and i was fine with her.
I know i have a lot of symptoms and feel in a lot of pain, but i can't find it in my heart to part from him, i don't know how long i can go on with this, but each time i think about rehoming him i cry and get very upset.
I take anti-histamine for the itching and that helps, but my throat and sinus stays bad, doctor didn't give me anything for them.
I know it makes sense to rehome him, but i just can't do it at the momment, i'm hoping this might improve in time, any encouragement will be appreciated.

Re: allergy to new puppy
Hi Jay
It is very hard to think about giving the puppy up, i suffer realy bad at the momment, its been two weeks now, and it has been very difficult.
What symptoms do you and your wife get, is it all the time in the house even when you are not by your puppy.
Im going to try allepet, the stuff you rub on your puppy, which is surpose to help cut down the allergens comming of the puppy.
Ive had to order it online, they don't sell it here in England, so i will have to wait for that to come.
Ive tried doing everything i can, and read about doing, to keep my puppy, i hope allepet helps.
I think we will come to a point when we will know what to do, we will be only able to take so much, keep trying all you can to help yourselfs and do the enviroment stuff in your house that Lucys web site says, and see if it improves, it may take a bit of time, to see if we can improve, if it just gets to much then we will have to part with our beautiful puppies, but least we know that we had tried our very best.
I hope it works out for us.

Re: allergy to new puppy
Hello, could you tell me if your syptoms have gotten any better? I just got a new puppy and am having some of the same problems. I break out in a horrible itchy rash on my arms when I hold him, and this morning I'm sneezing like crazy and my eyes are swollen, and I've noticed I'm wheezing a little bit. I'm willing to try anything, I do not want to get rid of the little guy, it will crush me! Any advice would be great!!!

Re: allergy to new puppy
Hi Tammy
Im sorry to hear your struggling with new puppy, i don't think there is much improvement, but im still trying to hold on to him, and trying out everything that might help, i can't part from him even though i have horrible allergies.
I take antihistamine twice a day, which help a bit with icting, but it does not help my throat or sinuses, and i have used Petal Cleanse or Allepet which you rub on them and thats surpose to help, you can order it over the internet or the chemist can order it for you.
Im trying to eat better vegetables and fruit to try a boost my immune system.
Im in the same dilemma, and don't know what to do yet, im hopeing i will get use to him, but i don't know if you can, its terrible being in this situation, when you love the dog.
Go to you doctor and ask him to try you on antihistamines meds, you might have to try a few differant ones to find one that helps, and try all the things Lucy recommends on this site.
Sorry i can't help any more than this, i will email you if i do start to improve.
Good luck

Re: allergy to new puppy
Hi guys, I am having the same problem as you, I think I may be allergic to my new baby pug dog. Its breaking my heart and I simply cannot part with him. I've waited so long to get him and we've bonded so well, it'd kill me to have give him back to the breeder - its just not an option.
Since he arrived on Monday I've been wheezing and my skins been a bit itchy, although I don't have the trademark runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing or rash or anything. My hands were itchy today but I've applied some handcream and it seems to have settled. I bathed my boy with tea tree shampoo and I've been wiping him with anti-allergen pet wipes. I've ordered an anti-allergen room spray and Petal Cleanse and pray to God it works for me. I'll be sure to let you all know how I get on.
When I went to view my puppy a few weeks ago I spent 3 hours at the breeders house holding all the puppies and playing with her other 12 adult pugs. I didn't have any allergy symptoms at all that day or in the days that followed. I am totally baffled and am wondering if this little guy is the cause of the symptoms.
I have owned a Springer Spaniel (which are meant to be high allergen dogs), other dog breeds, birds, rodents etc and have never had any problems in the past. My mother has Shih Tzu who I can cuddle for hours and have no problems with, even if he licks me or accidentally wee's on the floor and I clean it. I am so upset about this and its spoiling my enjoyment of my new puppy. My husband and 3 year old son seem to be unaffected - just me.
Please, please if anyone can recommend anything that might help me (no matter how silly it sounds) I'd be so grateful. I've suffered from depression for 3 years and since I've gotten this little guy I feel as though I've made a breakthrough in the short time I've had him.
Good luck all you guys, I hope you can tolerate your new pets, I know how hard it is to think about letting them go.

Please try Petal Cleanse room spray and Petal Cleanse for dogs...it helped me soooo much! Now I don't have to take antihistamines at all ! Its amazing stuff and my dogs coat is beautiful after I wipe him with the lotion. Even when Barney's casting really heavily I still have no symptoms. I dont suppose the previous occupants of your new place had cats or any other animals you may be allergic to? Good luck!

Re: allergy to new puppy
Hey, I'm so glad I'm not the only one going through this. I am suffering from itchy eyes to nasal congestion too. Our 5 months old chihuahua mixed terrier came into our lives about 3 months ago and I've noticed that my allergies were worst than ever. I didn't want to admit that as a reason but it was starting to interfere with my work so my boss suggested that I should meet with an Allergist to test if I'm really allergic to my dog. Oh my gosh, I did not even want to think that it could possibly be my dog. So sad:( Anyhow, I'm meeting with an allergist this coming Tuesday so I will find out. If it is true then I will find other alternatives. My very very very last resort is to replace him in another home. I mean, who knows their baby more than their mama, right? I will keep in touch with all of you to see what I find out.

Allergic?
I am curious if anyone has an answer to this? I have never had any allergies but I visited a friend of mine about 2 months ago and she had 2 long haired cats. It was my first interaction with long haired cats and I had troubles breathing and a stuffy nose not long after I had petted them. My question now is that I am going out of town and staying with a friend who has a Papillon. I believe this to be a long haired dog. Will I be allergic or is it impossible to know?

Re: Allergic?
Many more people are allergic to cats than dogs. You could be allergic just to cats, or maybe both. You won't know until you get to your friend's house.
If you think you might be allergic to dog dander, ask your friend to bathe the dog just before your arrival (with a moisturizing dog shampoo that does not overdry the skin) and have the house thoroughly vacuumed as well. Also open the windows for a through draft to allow some of the airborne dander to air out. All this will hopefully lower the dander levels on the dog and house. Plus, take some OTC non-drowsy antihistamines with you. Ask your pharmacist for advice.

Yorkshire Terriers. Hypo Allergenic or NOT?
I live with my in laws where they have a 1 year old baby. After visiting the doctor they stated that their son is allergic to dogs and that he has exzema. They want us to get rid of our dogs because it is the main reason their son is itching, rashing etc. etc. I have 4 yorkshire terriers where they stay in my bedroom and never leave the room. There is no contact whatsoever (Saliva, urine, pethair/dander). We have 2 air purifiers and have changed all the air filters for the A.C. with HEPA air filters. We even tried leaving the dogs with my parents for 2 weeks.
Their son still has the same symptoms and is not getting better. However they continue to blame my 4 yorkies. What can I do that will better the situation to lessen the hostility in the household?

Re: Yorkshire Terriers. Hypo Allergenic or NOT?
My son was found to have a severe allergy to dogs also. I had an 11 year old shiztu and I tried for a year doing hepa filters and vacuuming and nothing helped. We realized that we had to find someone to adopt her and we found a wonderful lady who we still stay in touch with. And no dog is hypoallergenic. My aunt had a yorkie who died from old age a year ago. We couldn't visit because my son would become a mess, hives, asthma, runny nose, just plain miserable. We figured that it would be fine to visit after he was no longer in the house especially after a year, but it didn't matter. My son hid in back of her couch and played on the carpet and he broke out on all of his exposed skin and had an asthma attack that night. She now has to have her carpets professionally cleaned in order for us to be able to visit. So even after a year that the dog is out of the house, the dander was still in the house. Dander is sticky and sticks to walls and is smaller than dust so it goes everywhere. I know this is long winded, but if your in-laws child tested positive for dogs by an allergist, than it may be time to start to find an adoptive family for your dogs. I know it's hard, trust me I was broken up for a long time, but the child's quality of life can really be impacted by an allergy. I hope all works out well for you.

Re: Yorkshire Terriers. Hypo Allergenic or NOT?
Thank you for your reply. I have a few questions to ask tho; how often did your aunt clean her house? Dander in a house for up to a year hrmm, when was the last time she cleaned her house thoroughly or professionally cleaned. I visited a yorkie expert and even an allergen doctor. Dander forms from dead skin from dogs that are similar to dust (dead skin from humans). The difference is dander sticks to fur 99% of the times, Yorkies however, do not have fur. Their hair is made out of human hair. I have several friends and coworkers who are allergic to dogs, yet they visit their friends who have yorkies on a daily basis. Well, anyway, thank you for your time.

Re: Yorkshire Terriers. Hypo Allergenic or NOT?
The following information is courtesy of Larry and Shirlee Kalstone who make Allerpet.
"If you have moved into a home where a pet has lived, it will take a year or more for all of the dander there to lose its potency."
Hair is still fur and dander is still skin and unfortunately that's where the allergy comes from. My aunt use to tell me that her yorkie was hypoallergenic because he had hair, but she became a believer when she saw the serious allergic and asthmatic reaction my son had when he was in her home. The hair versus fur thing is a myth when it comes to allergies. If the baby is having symptoms and it has been confirmed that he is allergic to dogs, than one can safely assume that the four dogs are the cause of it.

help please, i need to know if my daughter is alergic to animals
my 2 year old daughter started coming out in red itchy lumps all over her body in november when we had 2 kittens, they cleared up after the kittens went missing although she was around my mums collie cross dogs she didnt really come out in a lot more until we got our new dog a lurcher cross.we did have a flea infestation due to our kittens so the doctor has gone from thinking my daughter has chicken pox, to being allergic to flea bites but now the fleas are gone hes now said she may have scabies but there are no marks in between her toes or fingers and to be honest the rest of the family are ok. please can someone help me and soon as i think she may be allergic to some animals but i dont know how to tell for sure. the best think i can say is her red bumps on her skin are sort of like chicken pox (which has tested negative), she is very irritable, always crying, scratching like mad which has caused major scarring and always tired, she does get a lot of colds too and chest infections, i really need to know if having an animal in my house is causing my daughter so much suffering, we are awaiting tests but this could be months when an appointment eventually is available. please if anyone can help can you email me on dougie.claire@hotmail.co.uk as i know i will definatly get the reply then, anyone please im desperate for my little girl

Re: help please, i need to know if my daughter is alergic to animals
Maybe your mother could take your dog for a few months. Then you should clean your house as thoroughly as possible to get rid of as much of the dog and cat dander as possible. Vacuum all surfaces, including walls. Wash all washable surfaces and fabrics, and air the house out thoroughly. If after a couple of months without the dog at the home (and the house as animal dander free as possible) your daughter is feeling better, she might indeed be allergic to the dog. During this time she should also avoid contact with all dogs, including the ones at your mothers' house.

Re: help please, i need to know if my daughter is alergic to animals
Are you sure you haven't got fleas?
Could just be minor infestation for just your daughter to pick them up... Some people are more prone to getting bitten by them (esp children)
And it seems quite recent that you got rid of your cats that had fleas the last time to be completely sure you are totally rid of fleas.
Flea bites are very hard for a doctor to pick up as they can look identical to many things from scabies to shingles etc never head of Chicken Pox Try getting one of the lights that attract them and set it in a different room every night and see if it picks up any little buggers!
Anyway hope your kiddie is ok and you get everything sorted out

Re: help please, i need to know if my daughter is alergic to animals
The only true way of confirming if your daughter is allergic to any animals or anything for that matter is with an allergy test. Go to a different doctor if it is taking that long to get an appointment. Explain the situation. Usually an allergist will start with a scratch test, but perhaps even your pediatrician will order a blood test to get to the bottom of the itching. And at the same time have the doctor test for other possible allergens. Having an allergy is miserable and I went through the same thing with my son when he was little. Investing in a hepa filter is well worth it also, but will not solve the allergy problem.Hope all goes well.

Can you have a dog and live happily even with allergies?
I was wondering if there is anyone out there that has pet allergies, specifically asthma related to pet dander and that owns a dog? My boyfriend and I have been looking to get a dog for a while now. I'm a complete dog lover and he has never had a dog. He tends to sneeze and get mild asthma when he is in a small room or apartments with big dogs. We have a single family house and wanted to get a medium sized dog. We fell in love with a beagle/bulldog mix, but are afraid of his allergies. I dont want to get her and then have to give her away. Is there anyone who has a dog and has found ways to control their asthma?

Re: Can you have a dog and live happily even with allergies?
My son has an allergy to dogs and he can't even visit family if they own a dog...even small breeds put out dander. I have tried hepa filters and keeping her out of the bedrooms but nothing worked. We finally had to have a family friend adopt her. I would first confirm your boyfriend's dog allergy with an allergist and also make sure they test for dander and hair. I hope all works out for you.

Re: Once allergic are you always allergic
I'm an allergy sufferer myself and I can say that from my experience the theory that people grow out of their allergies is a myth. My allergies did not decrease as I got older, but I did learn how to manage them a lot better. I have heard of some people who became less allergic to their pet the longer they were exposed to the allergens, but I think it would really depend on how severe the reaction was to begin with. Have you considered taking your daughter to an allergist? This really helped me..They can do tests to tell you exactly what is causing the allergic reaction, and help you find a medication that works for you. For instance..I'm only allergic to the dog's dander, so getting a low dander dog would help me, but if she's allergic to a dogs sweat or saliva the breed of a dog would make very little difference. Also there are a lot of suggestions on this board and on the web of how to make accomodations to your home's enviroment so that your daughter's allergies will be minimized. The first time I had an allergic reaction to a dog I was hospitalized because it was so severe(i was 12 at the time). I'm 25 now and I was recently able to live in a house with a dog for a month because I had an allergy pill that worked for me and I took precautions to make my environment more allergy proof. I barely sneezed the whole time I was living there. I didn't outgrow my allergies but I educated myself about how to manage them and got a Dr. who was a specialist in that field to help me deal with my symptoms.

Bloodwork Done for Dog Dander
I just had bloodwork done to see if I am allergic to dog dander. It came back "High". My sister has an 8-week-old white lab at home. I went to visit her today and stayed 4 hours. I picked up the dog, played with her, etc. and she even bit my hand and drew blood. I have had no reaction at all. I'm wondering if that breed would be safe for me. I've researched the hypoallergenic dogs, but my heart belongs to the lab. Any thoughts?

Re: Old english sheepdog
Old English Sheepdogs are fairly large dogs (the larger the dog, the more dander) with LOTS of hair. Giving them frequent baths is not an easy task. Many allergic dog owners give their dogs weekly baths to help keep the dog's dander levels down.
You can find out more about OES on this active OES discussion forum at http://forum.oes.org/
Here are links to some of the OES & allergies discussions. Many people have had to give up their OES's due to owners' allergies. :O(

What is the difference, is there anything i can do. I feel bad because i have a totally different relationship with the male that the female. I also have this problem. I recently bought a boxer from a breeder in Tucson and when the dog brushes his paws against my skin, particularly my forearms, my arms break out in red bumps. I have no idea what to do and/or what is the cause. I've never been allergic to dogs, cats, or any pet for that matter. Also, I know I'm not allergic to boxers b/c I watched my buddies boxer for two weeks before and showed no similar symptons. What is going on here?
I would love to hear further about your story.

Re: Hives from one boxer but not the other
I'm not sure why but the allergic reactions have all but subsided. It took about 6-8 weeks but eventually the reactions just went away, I can't believe it! During that time period I switched the dogs food and I also got him neutered. Either one of those two events were the reason (although two vets I spoke with said that couldn't be the cause, but oddly enough another vet said try changing the dogs food to chx vs. beef based or vice versa) or I just got used to him over time. I really feel for you b/c I know how hard it is to be allergic. I had to give my last dog back to the breeder b/c of my reactions. There is also a product out there called Allerpet D that you might want to look into. Instead of putting it on the dog I would rub it directly on my forearms and it caused a lot of the itching to subside, although the bumps were still there. I used to use it every day but don't have to anymore since the reactions went away.

weird fash rashes
I don't know if anyone else out there ever heard of this or not, but for about 2 yrs. now, I have been getting this weird face rash with eye swelling. I've been to Derm. and they can't seem to explain it. I've basically eliminated all I can think of. Funny thing is, we got our shih tzu in April/06 and symptoms started in May/June/06. I just recently had to give him to another home because it was the only way to know for sure. I always had a little allergy to dogs but is it possible that I could be so sensitive to them now that it could cause this? The dermatologists suspect it could be something airborne and the only thing I can think of would be dander.

New allergies
My stepdaughter is 10 and has had allergies and asthma since I've known her (for about three years). We only see her once every three weeks, since she lives with her mother in another state.
Anyway, last week she had a terrible asthma attack at her mother's house. And was ill for several days. Her mother says the doc says it's because of a delayed reaction to our two fairly long-haired dogs, who she hadn't seen at that point for three weeks.
She and her mother have a shorter-haired dog of their own, but her mother is claiming that their dog is fine (it's a min pin) and that it's our dogs (again, who she hadn't seen in several weeks).
Can this be possible? (We think no. And in fact, she's here with us now for several days and is fine!)
Help?

Help, Dog urine affecting my eyes, nose and skin
My two and a half pound yorkie of four years has soiled areas of our carpet. Last summer, my eyes started burningand I have congestion all the time with my nose itching as well as skin. This summer as it is heating up my eyes are blood shot red and I don;t feel well and don't sleep good. Has anyone heard of the urine spores in the air causing health problems. I need to know so I can get out of this house, I'm so fatigued and my husband is not taking me serious about his little dog I got himm for christmas 4 years ago. I have always had and been around pets and never had a allergy problem with any element in life. I am so miserable and long to stop having red bloodshot, itchy eyes and a runny nose. Please help me with any facts to show my husband, for I want to do wood floors throughout the house and will that help?

I really want a beagle:)) this is my first time on board
My housing complex has just allowed us to have dogs and we are all besides oursleves with excitiment--But I am afraid of allergies. I used to have a dog growing up and while I had some colds during the year, I was never greatrly affected by her and she was a beagle mutt.
I was mildly allergic to cats and now I am worse--really cant bare them --but I do no know about dogs. I read differeing reports.
one said that the beagle if groomed weekly bathed and kept in a clean home can be handled and not be allergenic.
Other articles say mini poodles are the way.
This things is this my husband and I just fell in love with the breed, they are are every thing we think a dog should be. Cute to a point whe are both enchanted--they are smart and funny too. I went to a dog run the other day and the beagle was a 10 in looks and playing really hard with the other ones and dominating them and tricking them and making them run in cirles. Then instead of laughing this beagle gave a litte howl that was hilarious like out of a movie.
Even though she was so active she always checked in with her owner to make sure that eveything was on the up and up--she also greeted the viewers.
Well you can all see that this is a true love story!! I cant have that guys beagle, but I assume that with patient audtions, I can find one just as adorable.
The bottom line--do any sensitive people live with beagles without serious reprcussions? I do have unlimited air condidtioning in my apartment .
Also I like the runty kind--small them usual
Thank you for any feed back about my situation

Re: I really want a beagle:)) this is my first time on board
Beagles are not considered to be "low allergen" dogs. Many people are very allergic to short haired dogs like Labs, Dalmatians, Dobermans, Boxers, Pugs, and Beagles. I too am very allergic to dogs with this kind of coat, including Beagles.
I would choose a dog from the (supposedly)"allergen friendly" dog breed list, and then do a test to see how you react to these dogs.
Also, do a search for "beagle" on this forum. There are several messages where Beagles are mentioned.

Forgot to mention that Beagles can be very vocal and not the best breed if you live in an apartment. See

Thanks
I have been mulling it about--there is a beagle foster program, where I could take one for a few days and see if it is something I can deal with. I love them so much.
That said--I like toy poodles and I keep reading that they are low allergenic:)

Re: I really want a beagle:)) this is my first time on board
I have a beagle and he is an allergin trap. I love him to pieces, but I will probably have to get rid of him. I just have not gotten myself up to it yet. He is going to be a year old next month. He is a great dog, but when I sit next to him my eyes, throat and nose start to burn and swell up and get terribley red. I do believe that there are some dogs that are more prone to causing allergy reactions than others. I love Jasper, but I need to find him a home soon. HeI think the allergens from outside stick to his skin as well, because I have to bath him every week just to help with my allergies. It might also depend on the climate you live in. Where are you from?

Westies and Allergies
I'm 40 years old and have had allergies most of my life. Since having 3 children, my allergies have improved significantly to the point of not having them (although cats still pose a problem for me). We recently visited a family member who has a Westie puppy. My kids really want a dog so I let the puppy lick me face several times, and I patted the dog throughout the day and much to my surprise, no allergic reaction, I couldn't believe it. Since returning home, we have decided to get a Westie puppy as well. I've read a few articles that suggest these dogs are not good for people with allergies because these dogs are prone to skin problems. So I'm not sure how to interpret my day with the puppy and lack of reaction to the puppy. Has anyone had any experiences they can share with me or advice? My kids are really excited about the possiblity of getting a Westie, (and so am I) so I'm trying to really educate myself on these dogs. Any advice?, does anyone have a Westie and have allergies as well?

Have to lose our dog...
Just found out a few hours ago that our son is allergic to dogs...had Snoopy for about four years now, this is very sad for me. The wife seems to just take it as another task on our list of jobs for the day and I don't understand.
Worried about the little guy, though I understand intilectually and will get him a new home. Still, this is very sad for me and the kids, including the baby (Joey) with the allergy (he's three).
Maybe it doesn't sound 'manly' but I am just so broken up about it that I had to vent...sorry.

Re: Have to lose our dog...
I totally understand how you feel. Losing a dog can be one of the hardest things we have to go through. (Only dog lovers can understand this.) When my dog died, I cried three days straight, and then on and off for six months. I missed him so badly.
The best thing you can do for Snoopy is to find him the best possible home where he will be loved and well cared for.
All the best.

Son has pet allergy - do we find our dog a new home?
We just found out a couple of weeks ago that my 3 year old son has pet allergies (as well as others such as grass pollen, ragweed, and milk). We initially went to the allergist because he has eczema. In January he had pneumonia and wheezing. A couple of weeks later he again was sick with bronchitis and wheezing. His pediatrician suspects that he could also be asthmatic. We have had a lab living in the house for 2 years. We have also had a cat in the house ever since he was born. He has never shown any signs of pet allergies. However, after he had pnuemonia in January we visited a family member who has several cats living in the house. He ended up in the ER with what can be best described as panting. I assume it was an asthma attack. I wasn't surprised by the positive cat allergy test, but was by the dog allergy. We are heartbroken about the results as we really love our dog. The allergist said that often when children have lived with a pet from an early age they won't show outward allergy symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes, ect. He did start him on Flonase and recommended antihistamines as needed. Luckily, he does not have indoor allergies (dust mites, ect)other than our pets. I have read so much, but still don't know what to do. My son comes first and I don't think that it is fair to expose him to a known allergan, especially since he is so small. However, he and his older sisters are extremely sad about the prospect of finding our dog a new home. The cat has already moved outside as he has always been indoor/outdoor so he is now strictly outdoor. Is it possible for allergy sufferers to become immune to their own pets? Or do I risk making his allergy worse by continuing to expose him to the allergan? I take asthma very seriously and I don't want to risk his health. I am also hoping that by eliminating as many triggers as possible that I will fend off any future asthmatic episodes.
Up until my son had pneumonia, he had never shown any indication of allergies or asthma (other than the eczema). We had visited the same family member on several occassions and he never had any trouble. Can a lower respiratory infection cause an immune system response that leads to asthma?

Strange rash
hi, my 11 month old daughter began to get a rash a short while after we got a rat terrier puppy. the rash is not everywhere. the only place she gets it is on her chest, either in small bumps or red circles. the doctor said it is not ringworm, the vet said the dog does not have ringworm. it is present for about a week, will go away for a few days then return on her chest. she is always fully clothed and is constantly in contact with the dog, but a rash nowhere else. any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Re: Strange rash
Hi Josh,
This may be something youve done already, but have you taken your little one for a skin test? Mine had one recently and we discovered it was cats! The excthma is unfortunately hereditary and something my brother suffered from ( mostly on the legs - like my boy )
Im not too keen on bieng palmed off on bloody steroid creams - they are not good for small children.. I came on this site looking for some ideas or old fashioned remedies as this condition is nothing new!
If I come across anything I´ll mail you and let you know... but as far as my (limited ) knowledge goes excthma and allergy are totally different.
Ps: Have you tried changing the brand of washing powder for your family wash? That sometimes causes havoc with young skin...
Good luck , and let me know of any good info?
Thanks - Matt

Sounds like eczema. My son had it too and was later diagnosed with Asthma. The doc the 2 are virtually the same except one is internal and the other external. He suggested Eucerin cream and it did help.

Son's Allergies to Dogs
My son was diagnosed with mild allergy to dogs and allergy-triggered asthma when he was 2. We have a poodle. His only symptoms were congestion and shiners around his eyes. He sometimes coughed in t he moning but rarely at night. We rarely nebulize or use albuterol. At 3.5 years (today) he was retested and his allergies are much worse but symptoms are basically the same. The MD has decided to put him on sublingual immunotherapy plus meds for the next sicx mos and then we'll see. i feel like his allergy can't be any worse after the meds. However, he did have his very first allergy attack tonight (very scary) and i thnk it was from the dog mx test. Obviously he is not so allergic to the poodle. Has anyone has success with SLIT therapy? I am trying to be hopeful.

Is Nausea & diarrhea a sysmptom of dog allergies
I recently lost a dog that I had for six years. My son has suffered from abdominal pains for 2 or 3 of those years. The episodes stopped a year ago when I gave him ginger root pills. Three days ago I brought home a new puppy, a black lab/shepherd mix. My son has been sick for the last two days. I have not heard of these symptoms with regards to an allergic reaction and we are desperately hope it is not the dog. Has anybody had this experience? Or heard of anybody else experiencing this?

Re: Is Nausea & diarrhea a sysmptom of dog allergies
We have had all of the tests done, and I also took him for counselling thinking it may have been anxiety. The psychologist said I was wasting my money, that he was a very happy child, and the only test left is the Scope which I am reluctant to put him through. I was discussing it with a work colleage and I realized that we had brought home a different milk [2% - we usually buy skim] on the weekend as well. I'm leaning towards the thicker dairy product rather than the dog now. The symptoms did not seem like an animal allergy but the coincidence scared me to death. I am still mourning the loss of my other dog and the thought of getting rid of the puppy was stressing me out. Thank you for your input; the fact that you had never heard of these symptoms with an animal allergy is another rest to put my fears at rest. I guess it's back to the Doctor and no more milk!

Sudden allergy to dogs?? Please advise.
Hello, I'm new to this board. I was diagnosed at age 10 as being allergic to dogs and cats and dust and about everything else on the planet. I was prescribed antihistamines, and never had a problem unless I was around cats. Around cats, I have a severe asthmatic reaction, but I have always been fine around dogs. I was raised with multiple dogs, and now live in a five dog household. I am now 43 years old. We have Shiz-Tzus, Shiz-Tzu-Maltese mixes, a poodle, and a Yorkie. I have lived with these dogs for years with never a problem.
About three weeks ago, I came down with a bad chest cold, and my asthma became very severe. I became very wheezy and it was very hard to breathe, and I wound up in the E.R. getting breathing treatments. My family doctor put me on a stronger antihistamine, a nebulizer with DuoNeb and albuterol, a steroid, and a rescue inhaler. We have cleaned the house from top to bottom and put air cleaners in all the rooms.
My question is, could this suddenly be an allergy to my beloved dogs after all these years? I am praying to God that it is not so. I love those dogs with all my heart; they are my babies and I don't want to have to part with them. My doctor says it's unlikely that I have suddenly developed allergies, but those allergy tests when I was 10 years old make me nervous. Please tell me what you think. Thank you.

Re: Sudden allergy to dogs?? Please advise.
When I have a cold, my asthma often gets worse. The worse the cold, the stronger the effect on my asthma. I usually have to increase my asthma medications (per Dr's advice) when I am sick. Hopefully your asthma will calm down once the illness is over. Keeping the dander level in your house as low as possible should help too.

Re: Sudden allergy to dogs?? Please advise.
This is something to consider... Have you changed your dog food? I have never had allergies to anything. I am now 42. Back in 1995 I had two Boston Terriers. One day I came home from work and I started getting hives wherever my dogs touched me. It was the weirdest thing! I would be fine when I went to work and when I'd get home, I'd get hives all over again. My husband and I finally figured it out. We had been feeding our dogs premium dog food in the past. You could only get it in a pet store, not a grocery store. Well, we ran out of dog food and the pet stores were closed, so my husband purchased the original formula of Purina Dog Chow at a grocery store. I became severely allergic to my dogs when they ate it. Sure enough, when we switched back to their regular dog food, the hives went away. Now it's the beginning of 2008. I just moved to Cairo, Egypt. We now have a lab and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. My husband again bought Purina Dog Chow because there is not much selection here. I am breaking out in hives again 13 years later from the same problem. I am now planning on making their dog food. I have looked up recipes on-lined and am going to try some. I'm sure it will take a few days for the food to get out of their systems and for me to stop breaking out in hives. I wonder if there are many out there who think they are allergic to dogs when it's really the dog food they feed them! Incidentally, my 13-year-old daughter started breaking out in hives yesterday too.

Allergies to dogs not puppies
Is there a difference in puppy and dog dander? I realize that there maybe a difference in the amount of dander, but not saliva. Our daughter was diagnosed with dog allergies and a couple of other food allergies. It really showed with the dogs when a dog licked her. Now, a couple of years later she is showing no reactions to any of her food allergies and we have been exposing her to puppies with no reactions from fur or being licked. Is there a difference in puppy and dog saliva or dander? She wants a dog really bad, but we will not get a puppy and have to get rid of him/her in a few months if as the puppy ages she will start reacting again.

I think there is--I remember reading that many people with dog allergies don't react to puppies, but when the puppy gets older, they start having allergic reactions. I'm not sure why, but I think there is a difference.

Are animal shelters especially bad?
I have tested positive for dog allergies, but my parents have dogs and I lived with them fine for years. I did have allergy problems, but I also tested positive for other things in the enviorment, and I assumed that the other things were the real problem, since I still had the same allergies when I moved into the no-dog college dorms in the same state, even though they went away as soon as I went out of state. So I figured that I'd be fine with adopting a dog, and I've even picked one out. I'm just waiting to take her home. But both times I've been to the shelter, I had a bad sinus headache the next day. There are all sorts of other possibile reasons for the headache (one of the days I hadn't had much sleep the night before, for instance, and the next time I was worried about the possibility of an allergic reaction because of the first time, and may have faked myself out) but I'm getting worried. I was only there for a few minutes!
I'm getting an adult dog, and my basic feeling is that even if I have to find her another home, she'd be better off with me even temporarilly than in the shelter, especially since I would be housebreaking and training her (which would make her more attractive to other people looking for a dog.) And even if I have the same reaction I have at my parent's house, I'd still keep her...I'm just worried because I reacted WORSE to just a few short minutes with her at the shelter than I did to living with my parent's dogs, and if my allergies have taken a turn for the worse, I might end up with asthma or something, which would mean I'd have to give her up. I don't think it's a breed issue because my parents have always had such a random collection of dogs, and none of them have been low-dander breeds. I've also played with other people's dogs since I moved out on my own and never noticed a reaction (although it is possible that I may have just missed the connection...but I doubt it).
In conclusion, is there anyone else who normally has only mild dog allergies but finds places like annimal shelters really bad? (Does the amount of dander in the air affect the amount of reaction that much?) Or should I assume that either I have suddently gotten much, much worse, or that the dog I'm about to get is especially bad for me?

Re: Are animal shelters especially bad?
I recently found out that I have allergies to my pet, when I found this out, he was at the boarding kennel, I was not there for 5 mins. when I started reacting terribly to the dogs, but once we were home with one dog, it was gone. So my thought is that there are more dogs to cause the reaction to set in faster.

Re: Are animal shelters especially bad?
Yes, my asthma definitely gets a lot worse if I'm around a lot of dogs in closed spaces, for example, visiting the vet. If I dare to go to an indoor dog show, I usually suffer from bad asthma that day and for about a week afterwards. I also get terribly itchy even if I'm not touching any of the dogs. When my dogs come back home from a boarding kennel, I give them a bath immediately.

Re: Are animal shelters especially bad?
I can't even go to an animal shelter. I'm terribly allergic to both cats and dogs (I can't have either pet, which is depressing) and have horrible allergy symptoms (uncontrollable sneezing, itchy eyes and nose, itchy rash) if I even come close to someone who has a cat or dog, or am anywhere in the general vicinity of a cat or dog. When I was younger, before I knew I was allergic, my mom took me with her to the animal shelter (she used to volunteer there) once and less than ten minutes after I got there I was sneezing terribly and my eyes were itching like mad, which is when I found out that I was allergic.

Second-hand Allergy?
My brother is coming to visit with his family this weekend. He told me this week that he believes his son is allergic to dogs (I have 4). My question, can you get a rash from contact with someone who has had contact with a dog (in other words, no direct contact with the dog!). Any help would be appreciated! My guess is that it's possible his son's rash is from something else, since I visited him less than 2 months ago and his son didn't get a rash from contact with me. In any event, I want their stay to be long and pleasant! Help! And Thank you!

Re: Second-hand Allergy?
Unfortunately, yes it is possible to react to dog allergies without direct contact. It depends on the sensitivity of the allergic individual and the amount of "dog" on the carrier. Dander is microscopic, so even if you do not have dog hair on your clothes you can still be a dander carrier. The good news is that each individual person will only be allergic to specific breeds. I have no reaction to many breeds, a slight reaction to some and severe reactions to breeds in the hound family. If the son has allergies, there are plenty of things he could get a rash from other than dogs. I hope they can enjoy their stay and be able to play with the dogs!

Re: first time allergy
If you cannot pinpoint any other reason for the eye irritation, you could indeed be allergic to your new dog.
Getting a new dog after not having any for a while could trigger allergies that you didn't have before (or at least not as bad). This happened to me.

Re: first time allergy
As women leave their prime childbearing years, the immune system that was "quiet" to enable carrying foreign protein (i.e. a fetus), can become quite active. Women who never had problems in the past can develop allergies to any number of formerly tolerated substances/animals. Annecdotely, redheads are especially prone to this phenomenon.

Re: Help, my throat is always tight and hard to swallow, i am allergic to dogs is this a symptom?
What changed in your life 4 months ago? There are a lot of things that will cause allergies besides pets. Have you started eating something new? The reaction you describe is what happens to me when I eat raw fruits and vegetables - I did not have this problem when I was young. I have no problem with them canned or cooked. An increase in stress can also cause these symptoms. The allergy doctors say I am allergic to dogs and cats, but I only have a problem with specific breeds of each. It may not be your pets - check for food allergies.

I am going through the same thing basically...I have had like a lump and tightness on the left side of my throat and burning and even ear pain for 7 months now.....after many tests, they finally done allergy testing, and I am very allergic to dogs.....I have 3 little ones in the house with me...2 toy poodles and a chi......I have had dogs all my life also.....I started on meds...don't let them into the bedroom anymore..clean my house like a mad woman....but no pain relief yet....I have only been on the meds. a few days, so we will see....but I won't get rid of my dogs!!!!

I have the same problem
I have tested positive for dog allergies since I was a child, also having visited various allergists all my life (age 46). But I never really noticed the sypmtoms until I started shopping for a dog last year.
My family really wants a dog and I have always wanted one. So I did all the research and started looking at breeds that are less allergenic. I looked at poodles, schnauzers, bichons, malteses and other breeds. I soon began to realize that everytime I got near one of these dogs my lips and tongue would immediately start to tingle (not in a good way!) Then within an hour my throat would tighten and I would have difficulty swallowing. Nothing major but very uncomfortable. I have the same reaction when I eat tree nuts and shrimp.
One instance, I went to a pet store with my wife and she picked out a cute Cairn Terrier (I later talked to a breeder who said she sold Cairns to many allergy sufferers and never had any complaints.) My throat scratched and swelled about a half hour after we left the store. My wife tried to tell me it was all in my head. But when I went back the next day to buy the dog I spent some time holding the dog. I brought it to the counter to purchase. As I was doing the paperwork my throat began to swell and itch. I could not go through with the sale and luckily they refunded my $500.
Then I found a breeder in my town for a rare breed called the Coton du Tulear. (Small white dogs with hair, not fur) I spent a half hour with the breeder's litter and the puppies' parents. I had those adorable puppies and parents loving and cuddling me the whole time. I had no reaction at all! I was so happy! I wanted to buy one of their puppies but due to some family circumstances it was not a good time to bring a puppy into our home.
Now, I am about to enter into a contract to buy a Coton puppy from the breeder's son. I am very excited to be welcoming our puppy into our home at the end of January. I will let you know how it turns out.
Good luck with your problem. I hope you find a happy solution.
