Thanks Ellen. I guess I'll just stick with Bichons. That seems to be the only breed that people with allergies can tolerate.

Jul 20, 04 - 7:15 AM Just got new pup ... is it a cold or allergies??

We just brought home our new pup chihuahua this weekend and I am confused about whether my symptoms are cold-related or allergies. I started getting a cold a few days before we even picked up the pup, and my symptoms now include stuffy nose and chest tightnes, and a mild phlegm-producing cough. No itchyness, welting or sneezing (which would be a dead giveaway toward allergies). And, my symptoms dont get better after showering or even after leaving the house for a few hours (basically, getting away from the dog). So .... I dont know how to treat my symptoms?!?! And if it is a cold, it seems to be hanging around for a long time!!

I am definitely allergic to cats (sneezing, welts, itchy eyes, stuffy nose, etc) but really havent had any problems with dogs before.

Anyone offer any advice or experiences?

Thanks,

Gina

Jul 20, 04 - 5:22 PM Is one month a good testing period for dog allegies?

I am looking into purchasing a chocolate lab. I have asthma and I am very allergic to some cats, seem to be ok around dogs so far, but have never lived with one. The breeder will let me give the dog back within a month if I have any alegery problems. Is this long enough to find out if I am allergic to the dog? Any advice provided would be great.

Jul 20th, 2004 - 9:48 PM Re: Is one month a good testing period for dog allegies?

I can only tell what I have read - and it is that sometimes people don't find themselves allergic to a puppy but do find themselves reacting to when it gets older and gets its adult coat.

I don't know if you are getting this as a pup or adult dog. If the former I would see if you could ask the breeder to let you see the parents of the pup and see how your allergies do around them (rub your face and hands in their fur - etc). See if you get any sort of reaction - even a delayed reaction later that day. Maybe try this a few times - different days.

It sometimes can take awhile to become sensitized too so there is no guarantee that if you don't react in one month you never will. But I would think if you are quite allergic already you would definitely know in one month.

Jul 21st, 2004 - 11:25 AM Re: Is one month a good testing period for dog allegies?

I would agree, puppies often aren't as allergic causing as adult dogs, and 0ne month may or may not tell. As I said before it took me almost a year for my asthma to start again from our toy poodle but he was a very young pup when we got him. My sister, who is VERY allergic can't walk into a house where there are cats or dogs without terrible reactions. Everyones system and degrees of allergies are different I think. I've also read it depends on what else (pollen) at the time may be bothering you. That your system can sometimes tolerate so much, kind of like things stacking and then a dog may cause a major reaction because your already fighting so many other things. I'm always much better in summer. Asthma comes back in fall. When we didn't have the dog the asthma didn't return even in fall.

Want to hear somthing HORRIBLE!?! I have a Mini Schnauzer and was under the impression that I had no dog Allergies. So I adopted a beautiful Basset mix from the shelter. I was using a nose spray for other allergies ( dont know what kind have not been tested) Called Astelin. Well I had took it for a couple of weeks and had to stop because it was giving me a constant headach. When I stopped though...WOW My head has been trying to explode and I'm sneezing and even the roof of my mouth has been itching I love her already and I dont know what to do I guess I just needed to vent.... Good luck to all of you!

Allergies are cumlative - so if you are already having allergic reactions adding something - even something that you are only mildly allergic to can push you over the threshold.

If you symptoms are primarily sneezing, and sinus related you might want to try one of the steroidal nasal sprays. Astelin is an inhaled antihistamine - and you might find you tolerate the steroidal nasal sprays just fine. Also using systemic antihistamines: Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec, etc. might help you out. Best is to see the doctor and ask for some samples and see if you can tolerate before you lay out the cash for prescriptions.

Aug 2, 04 - 3:24 PM Allergic to one and not the other?

HELP!

My husband and I have had a beagle for 3 years. Last year, he adopted another dog who is a beagle -dachshaund mix. He recently decided to think he could be allergic to the newer one and not the first one. He doesn't seem willing to think it could be anything else. Can you be allergic to one dog and not the other? Aug 9, 04 - 8:54 AM Allergic to cat means allergic to dogs?

My wife has very slight case of asthma and is allergic to cats. So far, she has never noticed any allergy problems with dogs. One dog we know she has no problems with is the shetland sheepdog, which has stayed overnight at our house many times.

Considering this, now that my family is ready to buy a dog, do we still need to be careful to buy a dog that does not shed much? My understanding is that shelties do shed, so perhaps this means that my wife will not have allergy problems with most dogs.

Aug 10th, 2004 - 9:59 AM Re: Allergic to cat means allergic to dogs?

I don't know if there is any correlation such as if you are allergic to cats you are more likely to be allergic to dogs. But certainly it is possible to be allergic to one and not the other.

I would still 'test' out whatever dog you decide to get. Have your wife pet it, nuzzle her face and neck into the dog and then wait to see if there is a reaction. Asthma can be a late phase allergic reaction too - so wait a day to see if she has asthma or other allergy symptoms later on. Keep in mind it is also possible to become sensitised over time to a dog - so allergic/asthma symptoms may present later on. But if you have had a dog spend the night several times without problems I would think you are fairly safe - afterall there is going to be dander left behind from the dog spending the night.

A lot of people are more allergic to cats than dogs. I think being allergic to cats is one of the most common allergies.

Jul 14th, 2004 - 2:25 PM Re: what to do? PLEASE READ!!!

Sorry but no there is nothing that the dog can take. No matter what you do a puppy will always shed it skin cells ( dander ) and all dogs shed at least a little. Though there are shots that YOU can take "imunitherapy" i think it's called. Try looking up information on hypo-allergenic dogs. No dog is truly hypo allergenic but you may not be as allergic.

SOme dgos like this are maltese poodles abd schnauzers.

Hi!

I am also very much allergic to dogs. I bought a maltese about a month ago since they are considered to be hypoallergenic. I am slightly allergic to him. Some days more so than others. I would not buy any dog unless you were willing to be affected to a certain degree. I love my puppy and would not change buying him for a second.

Jul 19th, 2004 - 6:16 AM Re: HELP! Son has allergies to dogs!!!!

Hi,

We have a bicon frise, which we got as a puppy in November of '03. Last Friday, I brought my 5 year old into the allergy dr. for testing, as she was doing a lot of throat clearing, coughing at night, wheezing in the evening, and had congestion. We thought she was allergic to something outdoors, and wanted to see what it was. We knew she was probably allergic to dogs, as when she visits her friend's home with a yellow lab, she comes home a mess with congestion, but we never noticed a problem with our dog. However, in her skin testing, she was only allergic to Dogs!!! The allergist says she just took from Nov. of last year until this spring to have a reaction to our dog (which is supposedly a great breed to have for allergic people!). He said it is common to take a while to really show allergy signs like this to a dog in your home.

My opinion for you is to never get a dog, if you already know your child is allergic. I would never have gotten our bichon had I known the allegy symptoms my child would come down with to this dog. I was really surprised, as you find so many web sites that say how "safe" bichons are for allergy sufferers! Now we are faced with the heart-wrenching decision of if we should sell our dog or not. It will cost roughly $22 a month in medications for my 5 year old and an expensive central air purifier system to be installed to even consider keeping the dog. It is really an awful decision to make. It is almost like deciding whether or not to give a child away or not.

I guess it depends if you are willing to spend the additional money for meds and air cleaners, and there is no guarantee they will keep your son's allergies at bay. The allergy dr. said shots for dog allergies have a very low chance of working, and did not recommend them (they take 3-5 years of getting the shots, also!). What does your son think? Is he willing to live with the symptoms? Is he willing to take the meds necessary to help with his allergy if you get a dog?

It's a very hard decision, isn't it? We had all wanted a dog so badly and had waited years to finally purchase one. If I had known ahead of time that this would happen with the allergies, I really wouldn't have got a dog.

Hope that helps. Let me know what you decide, and if you have anymore questions.

Aug 19th, 2004 - 5:50 PM Re: Re: HELP! Son has allergies to dogs!!!!

Hi,

I was just fishing around and found your letter. Last January I purchased a Bichon because I was told that they were "hypo-allergenic." I have severe allergies just about everything, however, I wanted to purchase a pet for my five year old daughter. After a lot of thinking a research, I paid $1,000 and bought my hypo allergenic puppy. After one night, I began reacting. Second night, it got worse. By the third day, I went back to the pet store, who refused to take the puppy back or refund my money. Angry as I was at the pet store, I was falling in love with our Bichon Blossom. I decided to see if I could acclimate to her. After a month, I found my allergies unbearable. We were going to put her up for adoption when I decided to try a product called Nature's Miracle Dander remover and body deodorizer. Viola, I began to tolerate my little Bichon. Since she is white, she needs to be bathed once a week and then I apply Nauture's Miracle. I am so happy that I hung in there. Our Bichon has added so much happiness to our family. I hope this helps you and your son.

Sincerely,

Isabelle

My husband also is allergic/asthmatic to dogs. We had two Airedale Terriers in our lives, our male just passed away this January. As my husband got older his allergies/asthma got worse, always taking drugs and his inhaler. He has no symptoms now at all (since being dogless) rarely takes his inhaler. All my research there are NO dander free dogs, even poodles bother him. I am currently researching natural treatments for him. We both want another Airedale as we love the breed (they are suppose to be a low producing dander dog), this time around I will not let him clip them, they will not sleep in our room, I will wash the dog, filters, you name it. From all my research and trust me I have been on the internet constantly looking for help. I also know there is a new drug Xolair in the states, not here in Canada yet. Best of Luck to you and me!!!

Aug 29th, 2004 - 12:30 PM Re: allergic/asthmatic husband wants dog!

I'm sure you've heard about the poodles, bichons, and portugese water dogs, but no one ever talks about Old English Sheepdogs.

The deciding factor isn't a lack of undercoat, as the AKC claims. It is in the texture of the hair itself. The dogs above all have "hair" rather than "fur". It has a totally different structure and feel, and won't hold dander well. These dogs also shed about as much as you and I.

I have terrible allergies and an Old English. I can hug her, brush her, sleep on her bed, and not even get an itchy nose. In order to minimize the grooming I keep her in a "puppy cut"; we're both happy!

They require about 30 minutes of walking a day, but other than that are quite docile and can live in a fairly small apartment. They're not a very dominant dog, not too active, GREAT with kids, like other dogs, and LOVE their humans. They DO need to be trained as puppies, since they aren't really all that smart, and it's harder to teach them as they get old. But not being smart, means they don't get bored, which means they don't dig, chew, or get into the trash can.

I never would have thought that I'd love this dog so much. But she's just a good, cuddly, happy, loving companion, that doesn't make me sneeze!

Good luck!

Aug 4, 04 - 8:05 AM Vizsla and Weimaraner allergies YES OR NO?

I am thinking of buying either a vizsla or a weimaraner. I have never owned a dog before, however I work in an office where there is a dog everyday. I do not believe that I will be allergic to either of these dogs but I am worried about 5 years from now with children. If they are allergic then I would have to find another home for my dog, which would be terrifying. Do any of you have experience with children and these two types of dogs? Or any pointers or warnings when getting either of these breads?

Aug 29th, 2004 - 12:38 PM Re: Vizsla and Weimaraner allergies YES OR NO?

All I know is that I have allergies, and my neighbor had weimaraner. I couldn't even pet the dog without sneezing for hours!

Try an Old English Sheepdog. They have hair like you and I, not fur. They are super with kids! (Remember Peter Pan? Nanna was an OESD.) Need about 30 minutes of walking a day, but can live in an apartment. They aren't very dominant, they like other dogs, are very patient, and not too smart - which means they don't get bored - which means they don't dig, chew, or get into the garbage.

They DO need to go to puppy training class. They don't learn well when they get older, so I don't advise going to a rescue for someone who intends to have children. But, the things they learn as young dogs stay with them forever.

I can bury my face in my OESD's coat, sleep in her bed, brush her, etc. and never even have an itchy nose. She and my allergies have lived together for 10 years with no problems. I DO keep her in a Puppy Cut, because I don't have the time to groom her. I think she's cuter that way than when she's in full cut, and we both are happier too!

Good luck!

People can be allergic to any kind of dog. I reccomend "babysitting" the dog that you want for a week. By then you'll know if your mom can tolerate the dog. If you do "babysit" make sure you can take her back if you are unfortunate.

Sep 8, 04 - 4:18 PM NEED HELP!!!SOS!!!

Hi everyone!

I've been reading some posts around here (since I'm new), but I rally haven't found an answer to my problem yet :(

It's as follows:

In my home there's always been a dog. Currently we have 6 dogs(!), well thy're already with us for 4 years!. Till now we had absolutely no problems, but in the latest allergie test, my father was discovered an allergie towards dogs!!It's true that he was allergic to cats before, but he tells me he's also owned dogs since he was a little kid (VERY big dogs and in the house)and he never had any problems...

As I've read here (and in other sources) I've discovered that an allergie can surprise you at any moment...and I accept that. So what I'm looking for now is for a posible SOLUTION/ALEVIATION to this allergie.'Till now I knew absolutely nothing about allergies...so I would really appreciate some advice, specifically I'd also want to know if there's any possibility with some sort of de-sensibilization program...

This is a really desperate case... my father has still no "big" symptoms (he only coughs when we let some dog indoors), but I really wouldn't want him to get worse...and GETTING RID OF ANY OF THE DOGS IS NOT AN OPTION! We all love them too much.

Oh yes! Some more data:

- my father is close to his 60s and has never suffered asthma

-my dogs are RARELY let in the house, they are garden-dogs. However, we do let them enter the basement (my father never uses the place) so they can make me company or when a storm is near.

PLASE, i NEED HELP DESPERATELY!!!!!!!

I WANT THIS TO WORK!!!!

IF THERE'S ANYONE WHO HAS ALREADY TRIED THIS DE-SENSIBILIZATION PROGRAM AND CAN TALK TO ME ABOUT IT,I WOULD BE INCREDIBLY GRATEFULL (OR IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE I CAN IND INFORMATION OR WHERE IT'S PRACTICED)!!!

That said, anything will help...

Thank you all for haveing the time to read my post... :/

<< This is a really desperate case... my father has still no "big" symptoms (he only coughs when we let some dog indoors),>>

The first thing you should do is to give the dog a bath before letting him in the house or any place inside where your dad spends time. This will greatly reduce the amount of dander he has and also get rid of any pollen etc. on his coat.

Sep 9th, 2004 - 10:18 AM Re: NEED HELP!!!SOS!!!

I don't know if this will help....I have suffered from allergies/asthma for most of my life. I am highly allergic to pets. I recently had to move into my mother's house. We have separate apartments. She has a manchester terrier. I have really fallen for this dog so I let him into my apartment sometimes. I restrict him to the front two rooms, I never let him near our sleeping areas. He is given baths frequently and as soon as he leaves I vacuum. The Febreze Anti Allergen product helps some too I think. I also have a HEPA filter, it was very expensive but I think it has helped the most.

I don't know if your Dad has any other medical conditions, but these prescription medicines really help me: Allegra in the a.m., Singulair & Zyrtec at nite. I have an Albuterol rescue inhaler and an Advair preventative inhaler. I know it sounds like a lot but it has helped me so much I am CONSIDERING a dog of my own. I'm not sure what you mean by de-sensatizing therapy,,,but I do go for allergy shots 2x a month that have helped also, I believe it is what you are talking about. A good doctor will walk dad through it I'm sure.

Aug 23, 04 - 10:13 AM Ther is hope.....don't give up!!!!

In 12-01 I ended up in ICU for 1 1/2 days and next step for 3 1/2 more days due to a horrible asthma attack. I never had asthma before and we didn't know what was wrong with me. The only change in my life was I had rescued a dog 1 1/2 days before, yet I already had one dog and had dogs almost all my life, so why should it be a problem now. Well, after about 6 months I was able to go off my Rx for a week in order to have allergy tests done. We finally found I was allergic to dogs. My husband's first reaction was to get rid of our 2 dogs. I refused to do that to the dogs or our children, it wasn't their fault. I kept with it and did make a lot of changes, but am happily living with my 2 dogs, husband and 3 boys. I do have to take Zyrtec daily, got rid of my heavy drapes and switched to light weight swags that can be washed frequently. Took up the carpeting and laid down hardwood floors and got hepa filters for the house. The dogs aren't aloud in the bedrooms or on the furniture and are put in the air conditioned/heated laundry room with their water and food at night that has a dog door to the outside for their freedom. By giving them their own room it also gives us the chance to control not having them in the house all the time, without having to confine them to a cage. Every now and then, like this week, I go off my allergy Rx to see if I have gotten over my reactions to the dogs, but know the signs to look for to go back on the medicine if needed. Even with the medicine I really only have a problem if the dog licks me, which we are working on. So DON'T give up.........There is hope and living with your dog is possible. It just takes willingness to make some changes. Oh, I no longer have to use my inhaler or my hepa filters, so nothing lasts forever either!

Thank you for your letter! I have had alleriges and asthma all my life, and I am almost 26. I have had many animals, but when I got my own cat at 9 years old, things got awful. I couldn't move because I couldn't breathe, and after having to be on steroids for over three years, I still was so highly allergic that we couldn't have the cat, or anything else, around me.

Fast forward to present, and I still have my allergies, but with the new medications out there, they are controllable. I have to wash my hands immediately after touching my new chihuahua puppy, and I cannot have him in my bedroom, and I have to take allergy meds, including benedryl when things get really bad. But sometimes avoidance can be worse than just suffering through the allergies.

There is always hope, especially in the 21st century...so I agree with you, to hang in there!

Sep 13, 04 - 7:15 PM dogs and allergies

I bought a house and closed on it 10 days ago. Since I have been here, I have been miserable because I have all the symphons of dog allergies that I discovered I had 2 years ago when visiting a friend. I called the realtor and she found out that the previous owners had 2 dash hounds while they lived here. They had moved out 4 months before it sold and evidently the odor/pet smell/dander had a chance to settle before I looked at the house because I smelled no evidence of a dog in the house when I looked at it. If I had, I would never have bought it. I had all the carpet cleaned last week and am having all the air ducts cleaned tomorrow. What else can I do? I've only been in the house 10 days - I can't possible put it on the market again so soon, can I? Please, please advise.

Wash all carpets, floors, window coverings, and any fabrics that came with the house. Check out professional carpet cleaners that offer special services for getting rid of animal dander. Open all windows frequently and thoroughly to air out the house. Also buy portable HEPA aircleaners for all the rooms where you spend a lot of time. To get rid of the dander deposit in the house takes some time, so you will need vacuum the whole house repeatedly and very thoroughly. Good luck!

Jul 1, 04 - 11:19 PM Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers

I am thinking of getting a soft coated wheaten terrier. My son has reactions to some dogs, but not all. Does anyone have any experience with this breed?

I Had a soft coated wheaton terrior from early childhood to my late teens, and my allergies, and my sisters allergies are terrible. And all those years that i had my soft coat, i experienced no allergies, nor asthma at all what so ever. To tell you the truth in my opinion my soft coat was an excellent dog, good with everyone and very affectionate. I would suggest deffinately getting one without the worries of allergies.
wat its to ya?

We just got a Soft Coated Wheaton last week after carefully researching all of the various breeds available and what we wanted in our new dog.

My wife has terrible allergies and is even a severe asthmatic. Her parents have a Wheaton though and she never had problems so we gave that a try. Low and behold, no problems so far, even when she carries the dog. I'm keeping my fingers crossed but am very optimistic that we made the right choice.

I suggest your son spends time with some wheaten(s) before making the decision. Some allergic people seem to tolerate them, but I also personally know people who do get allergic symptoms from theese dogs.

I had a wheaten terrier for nine years. Wheatens can be just adorable, but I would like to remind that they are terriers; they need proper basic obedience training and especially males can be quite tough.

Their coat also needs very regular grooming (daily combing!), otherwise it'll get quickly tangled. They don't shed their coat, but combing or brushing will release lot of loose hair, so it might be good idea to do it outdoors.

Hi,
I would ask his Doctor before bringing a dog into the house, he might have the same reaction. Hope I could help.
