Comments: Dear fellow allergy sufferers: I
would love to hear about your experiences with a dog or other animal
allergy. Does anybody have a happy ending story to share? Are you
allergic to your dog/s, but still happily co-existing with him/them?
How did you achieve that?

Comments: I love your webpage! The orchids are beautiful.
Your dog is so cute, I'd never seen one. I have a rare breed dog,
called a Coton de Tulear, which originated on the Island of
Madagascar from an interbreeding of shipwrecked Bichons and native
dogs. It is a small dog that has white cottony hair. Because of the
fact that it is a kind of Bichon, it does not shed, so it can be
tolerated by people with allergies, like my daughter, who has
moderate allergies to plants and animals. We use many of the same
precautions for her as mentioned above, the dog is not in her
bedroom, and I bathe the dog twice a month. I actually believe these
little gentle housedogs are slightly less allergy forming than other
Bichons however, due to their skin being relatively dander free, and
expecially due to the fact that unlike the silky hair of the
Maltese, their dry "cottony" hair does not contain the natural dog
oils found on many dogs coats, like the silky terrier, so the hair
itself is more hypoallergic, if the dog is bathed with a non allergy
shampoo. However, these dogs are very people-attached, and want to
sit in your lap and have lots of snuggles, and they want to be with
you all the time, so if this contact is not possible for you, the
dog will actually suffer emotionally. So you would want to make sure
you could tolerate this amount of contact, for the dog's sake. They
also are mainly indoor dogs, and cannot be outside for long periods,
because of this love of people, not because of hardiness, they are
very hardy little tykes. Visit me at Http://wwwgeocities.com/heartland/plains/8293,

Cotonnews, at http://members.aol.com/cotonnews/index.html

Comments: I have suffered from allergies all of my
life....and as a child I was plagued with asthatic bronchitis. I
grew up in a household with three dogs and was miserable....but
Doctors never diagnosed my allergies until I was 20 years old. I am severly allergic to horses, cats, ferrets...anything furry I
guess...and usually all dogs. Once I was on my own I longed for a
dog but knew the allergies would be terrible. My roomate suggested a
Miniature Schnauzer because they do not shed. Besides the absolutely
wonderful personality of a Miniature Schnauzer...they do not cause
an allergic reaction for me at all. My dog sleeps with me and has
since she was 6 weeks old. Britta is groomed every 6 - 8 weeks, but
I bathe her approximately once a week. She has a soft coat of hair,
but some Schnauzers fur may be a little more coarse than hers.
Schnauzers can sometimes have sensitive skin and allergies as well,
since they are in the Terrier family. The only time I may suffer an
allergic reaction associated with her is when I take her to the park
and she plays with other dogs who shed and leave dander on her. I
would highly recommend a Miniature Schnauzer for someone who has
allergies but loves the companionship of a loyal, loving dog.

Comments: We have a 5 month old American Hairless Terrier,
named Zydeco. My husband has severe dog/cat allergies, and I would
like to share our experiences with you. We have 2 kids, and I always
wanted our kids to grow up with pets, especially a dog. But with my
husband's allergies, we didn't think it would ever happen. A few
years ago, we saw some rescue greyhounds at a festival, and I fell
in love. I checked around and asked lots of questions - everyone
connected with the group assured me that greyhounds were
"hypoallergenic", causing little or no reactions. We adopted Delia,
who lived with us for almost a year. None had any allergic reaction
to her, but she never adjusted to living with us and began fear
biting. With regret, we returned her to the rescue group, hoping she
would find a better home than we could give her. We adopted another
greyhound, much younger and more outgoing, Alex. He was a wonderful
dog, and we all fell in love with him after a very short time. After
living with us for about 2 months, my husband starting having severe
allergy problems. He could not be in the same room with the dog -
sneezing and having difficulty breathing. We tried the recommended
things - allerpet lotion for the dog, hepa air cleaners, restricting
the dog's access to parts of the house... We were devastated when
none of this helped, and we had to give Alex back too. It was
heartbreaking - and I thought I would never have another dog. We saw
something on tv about a hairless dog, and it caught my interest.
This time, I did thorough research, and eventually found out about
the American Hairless Terrier. It was the perfect dog for us. We
have had Zydeco for about 2 months now, and absolutely no allergic
reactions. He does not sleep in our bedroom, and generally doesn't
go upstairs at all (not really because of allergies - more because
of his puppy curiosity!) My husband loves him, and plays with him
constantly. He holds him, and handles him daily, and never has any
problem. An added bonus is no shedding, and no fleas. This is the
dog that we never thought we'd have. He has been a joy and has
become a wonderful part of our family. There are no guarantees, but
this is truly the closest thing to a nonallergenic dog I have ever
experienced. Be very cautious when you decide to add a pet to your
home if you have allergies. It is very hard to have to give up a
beloved dog if you start to have problems, and it is a long term
commitment. Learn about how to control pet dander and be aware that
it may be more work for you, but if you are committed, it can be a
very rewarding experience.

Comments: Thanks for the input. I'm sure I'll revisit your
page. I'm not even 100% positive that I'm allergic to dogs. I 've
taken blood tests which indicate a very high reaction to cat dander
(5+/ out of 6!). We hadve 2 cats. Also, one dog. However, I'm
sceptical as to validity of these "results." I've had animals all my
life, so I wonder if I suddenly have developed an allergy to them.
Perhaps it's something else in my environment or diet. I've tried,
unsuccessfully, to isolate the factor(s). Have been to
dermatologists and allergists and even dermatology dept. at a huge
hospital. Something makes me ITCH!!! It can be maddening at times.
Prednisone seems to help. However, it has rather bad long-term
effects. Thus, I 've taken it sparingly. Do you know of any natural
"cures" for itchging? I've read somewhere that pineapple helps. Any
other herbal suggestions? Thanks, again for whatever info. you can
share. ~~~Arnie Levine.

Comments: I also have a puppy and I am allergic. Has
anyone heard of a product called alerpet? where can I get it and
does it work? I'm looking for a doctor Allergist who will help me
deal instead of giving her up. Where can I get the Hepa air filter?

Comments: Hello I have mild allergies, but desperately
want a pet. I have a small apartment, and am gone from 9-5. I like a
sturdy, play ful dog, who does not have to have constant pampering.
One who will go for a playful jaunt, or sit with me when watch ing
TV or reading.I dont like constant fussing or primping with fur. Can
you recommend a dog for someone who doesnt have many friends but
would make a loving, caring owner for a special friend. P.S. My
allergies tend to be itchy swollen eyes, and sneez ing. Thanks Susan

Comments: I am allegeric to dogs but, like all of us, want
a dog. I have an allegeric reaction that, after about four hours or
so of do exposure, I have heavy breathing. It is worse with cats by
far. In your opinion, is the heavy breathing reaction the hardest of
all allegeries to beat or moderate? TIM

Comments: After doing some research on your pages. I have
fallen in love with the Kerry Blue, the Min Schnauzer and the Bichon
F. Which dog is most suited for apartment dwelling? Which one is
most suited to keep its own company from nine to five (my mom will
be home and although she likes dogs is not a coddler) Which one is
the least allergenic of the three? Which one will take the least
amount of grooming? Which will be the most adaptable to my
ways(going for a walk, or lying beside me while i read) Which animal
will take to another pet(I am thinking of buying a Siberian
kitten(hypo allergenic fur)too)and have them grow up together. Can
sombody please write me and give me some advice? Susan

Comments: I got my puppy BEFORE I underwent allergy
testing. I discovered that I'm allergic to cats & dogs plus dust
mites. Great. My animals are VERY used to sleeping with me and the
few times I've tried to keep them out of my room they holler, bark,
meow, claw, scratch and make all sorts of lovely noises at my door.
What to do? Also, where can one find the HEPA filters? I'm supposed
to undergo the shot treatment, too, so I hope that helps. One test
showed I was mildly allergic to dogs, another showed I wasn't at
all. It's more the cats, probably. I have a mixed shepherd, lab,
keshond pup with thick fur.

Comments: Hi All: Here's my story... I'm a dog groomer in
SC who after many years of grooming developed allergies to (of all
things) DOGS! I have not and will not give up my career but I do
have a couple of tips. Regular grooming will help remove loose and
shedding hair and dander. Products such as Allerpet do help if used
consistently and when applied thoroughly. Also, for myself, I
regularly vacuum, dust and use an air cleaner in my bedroom. But,
the other thing I'm sure to do is... wear socks, shoes or slippers
always in my house to prevent allergens from getting on my feet and
therefore into my bed and I never pet my animals after my evening
shower except I do rub them with my stockinged feet so they still
know I love them. They've adjusted and now lay at my feet in the
evenings for rubbing. Good luck to everyone.

Comments: About 5 years ago I lost my Golden Retriever to
a heart Problem, so a few years ago I got a cat. I've realized that
in the last year I've formed an allergy to my cat, and I really
can't keep her. When I went to the doctor for allergy testing, not
only did cats come up positive, but so did a slight allergy to dogs!
I really want a dog, and the allergy is very minor, so can anyone
recomend a breed good for a family of four. I have 2 teen kids that
would love it to death and back again, and me and my husband. I
really don't have the time to fuss with a very high maintenence dog,
but I will brush and bathe it regularly. It must be active, and most
importantly loving and good natured! Non~allergenic is a must!
