American Hairless Terrier
AHT intro

Agatha and Abbie
American
Hairless Terrier
The first American Hairless Terrier (AHT) was born in 1972 in a litter of
mid-sized Rat Terriers. The AHT's are loving, playful, lively, alert
and intelligent dogs. They are completely hairless except for
eyebrows and whiskers. Their skin is usually pink with black, gray,
brown or red spots of various sizes. It is warm and very soft to the
touch. This soft skin makes them especially suitable for allergy
sufferers. The hairless gene in the AHT's is autosomal recessive and
not semi-lethal dominant like in the other hairless dog breeds. The
AHT's have a full set of teeth and typically have no skin problems
related to the hairlessness. They make loving and delightful
companions! (text by Sweet Lucy 1996)
Fun
with American
Hairless Terriers
If you are lucky enough to be owned by an American Hairless Terrier,
there won't be many dull moments in your life. At home, your
fun-loving little terrier will keep you entertained. On quiet
moments, you will have a sweet snuggle-bunny to cuddle with you.
During your outings with your AHT, a crowd will often gather around
you. You can't hide with an AHT! People want to know what kind
of dog you have or what happened to your dog's hair. People will ask
you all kinds of weird questions. My favorite one is when little
kids ask me "Is that a skinless dog?" about Lucy. And they ask that
a lot. :o) For my Xolos, my favorite question is "Is that an African
Wild Dog?". And then they back of from fear of being bitten by a
wild beast. :o) Other questions and comments I've heard about Lucy
include "Is that a piglet?", "Is he a Chihuahua?", "Why do you shave
him?", "What's wrong with his skin?", "Yikes, ugly!", "Is that dog
really pink?", "I've never seen anything like that!", and "His skin
feels like a peach".
Intro
to hairless
This web site is an introduction to the American Hairless Terrier
and other hairless breeds. Think of it as a starting point in your
journey to the fascinating world of hairless dogs. You will find
lots of AHT and hairless dog breed info and a multitude of links to
other related sites. If you are interested in acquiring a hairless
dog, please contact a reputable breeder or rescue organization. I am
not a breeder. Since I am severely allergic to dogs, I have also
created pages about
human pet
(dog) allergies.
How
this web site got started in 1996
In 1996 I was on several dog related email discussion lists, and
many list members from the US and several foreign countries asked me
what the American Hairless Terrier (AHT) looked like. Most had never
even heard of the breed before! I searched the web for a site about AHT's, but I found none. I did find a couple of multiple breed web
sites that mentioned the AHT by name, but that was all. Finally,
that Christmas Santa brought me a digital camera, and I created my
first AHT web page with pictures of my American Hairless Terrier
"Sweet Lucy". That's how Lucy became the first AHT in cyber space!

2004
Update
The content of my AHT web site has not changed that much since I
first published it in 1996-1997, however, lots has been happening to
the American Hairless Terrier itself. During the last nine years,
awareness of the breed has increased dramatically. Many more people,
especially dog allergic ones, now own AHT's. Today AHT's can be
found in several countries outside the U.S., including Belgium,
Canada, Czech Republic, England, Finland, The Netherlands and
Russia. Another milestone for the AHT was the United Kennel Club's (UKC)
recognition of the breed on January 1, 2004. Several wonderful web
sites about the AHT have been created as well. You will find links
to these on my AHT links page.
2005
Update
To celebrate Sweet Lucy's 10th birthday in April 2005, Sweet Lucy's
web site moved to its own domain here at
sweet-lucys.com. Finally
:O). Sweet Lucy's site and the AHT Gallery site are now combined
into one website. Please bookmark this new location.
Note: There are many websites, especially multiple
breed web sites, that have "borrowed" text and photos from Sweet
Lucy's site, but this site is the original one. :O)
Use the links on the left to navigate through the AHT
pages or go to the
SiteMap for a
complete page listing.
Sweet Lucy's website celebrates its 12th anniversary this
year!
