Sweet Lucy at the
Grand Canyon
Arizona, 1998
Hello!
I am quite a seasoned traveler and often vacation
with my folks. This summer (1998) I accompanied them on a trip to
northern Arizona. The highlight of the trip was, of course, seeing
the Grand Canyon, but I visited many other interesting places too. I
also met many canines, big and small, while sightseeing. Seems that
there are many traveling dogs like me! I was allowed to visit most
sights, but they never let dogs in the buildings or in the hiking
trails. Here are photos of some sites I visited.
Your friend, Sweet Lucy
Grand
Canyon National Park
This park encompasses 1,905 square miles, including
277 miles of the Colorado River that created the canyon. The
reduction in the height of the river bed has been brought about
mainly over the past 9 million years.
The sun was very intense and I tried wearing my
pj's to protect my skin from sunburn, but it was TOO HOT! I started
panting and my tongue was hanging out, so I had to give up and just
wear sunscreen. At it was still hot! People were very curious about
me whether I was wearing my pj's or not. I created a sensation even
at the Grand Canyon which has the world's best view. People were
turning away from the view and looking at me instead! I wonder if
this is how movie stars feel... ;o)
By the way, this picture is quite misleading... I
am not anywhere near the dangerous cliff. I am sitting on a thick
stone fence that has a very slightly sloping hill behind it. The
deep drop down is way behind the tree on the right. Fooled you, hah!

Montezuma
Castle National Monument
Sinagua farmers began building this five-story,
20-room dwelling early in the 12th century. The castle stands in a
sandstone cliff recess a hundred feet above the valley. It could be
entered only on ladders!
 |
Think about the people climbing up and down those
ladders every day! I wonder if they had any dogs... I saw a
few lizards and met a nice black lab here. I am enjoying
some shade here, a nice little break from the sun. That poor
black lab was so, so HOT! |
Petrified
Forest National Park
I journeyed into the Triassic Period of 225 million
years ago and I saw lots and lots of petrified wood. I also saw
Puerco Indian ruins that dated back to 1100-1400, Indian rock
drawings, and many, many wonderful views including that of the
Painted Desert.
 |
They wouldn't let me collect any petrified wood as a
souvenir. It is against the federal law and carries a
minimum fine of $275! And it was... HOT! |
Sunset
Crater Volcano National Monument
This crater began to form over 900 years ago as ash
and cinders erupted from a fissure in the ground. Lava flowed from
the base of the crater, leaving black rivers of hardened lava.
 |
One side of the volcano looks like it is in the shade
all the time. Hmm, I wonder how they got the idea for naming
it... This time I got lucky, we had a nice cloudy afternoon. |
