(Peruvian Hairless, Perro sin pelo del Peru)
Chanchilitos - Sep 2005

Hello;
Ran into your PIO page, and thought I'd send a shot of the puppy
that we brought
back with us from Peru. Chanchilitos is almost 8 months old now, and
has adjusted
well into her new home. She's one of the smaller breed, being just
12" at the
shoulder and a little over 13 pounds. Because of her light build she
weighs less
than half of my beagle (and less than the cat, too.)
Just for your information, the Quechua name for the PIO is 'Calato
Al'co', or
literally 'Naked Dog'. Most people in Peru just call them Calato. In
the mountains
where my wife's family lives (the dog was a gift from my
brother-in-law) black is
the preferred color since they don't sunburn like the white. There
is also a very
beautiful, very rare coloration, like coffee with cream, which I've
only seen once.
Anyway, here's Chanchilitos at the park. Her tail is tucked down
because she
doesn't like being on the table.
Sincerely,
Brian Bixby
