Xoloitzcuintli Friends - p.26
Sage - added Nov 2009

My 6 year old Xolo (?) is a rescue dog. She is precisely like a stereo-typical Xolo except she is coated. She has the same build and the same eyes and the very same temperment as hairless, but she has a short completely grey coat. The insides of her hind legs and her lower tummy are bare, the rest is really a very normal dog coat that sheds about twice a year. I have heard that coated Xolos were traditional destroyed at birth, and I hope that is no longer the practice.
Anyway, just as every other owner says, she is a treasure. She is naturally very polite. Immediately respectful towards children and seniors and cats but ready to go after every bunny rabbit she spots. Watching her run is a beautiful thing. She is agile and atheletic catching a ball. She is also very alert about outdoor noises and, as been said many times, an excellent watch dog, but not an excessive barker. She makes some small whiny noises when it's time for her daily walk and although she's good on a leash, frankly, I don't even need a leash with her as she stays nearby with no training for that whatsoever.
I have been happily surprised over and over at how well she fits in with my family with very little instruction. She is a natural house dog, never tears anything apart, never roots around in the trash, only eats what is given to her. I didn't need to change any of my own habits for her (like getting lids for trash cans, or keeping food off the coffee table, or putting shoes away in the closet . . .) She is a very easy dog to live with. I'd have to say her personality is absolutely sweet as pie. She takes all her cues from me, acting either confident and friendly, or suspicious and wary depending on my assesment of any situation. She is sensitive and responds to commands that are whispered better than given even in a regular voice. I could go on and on because I am just so excited to be introduced to this wonderful, wonderful breed.
